There is several ways you can do this.

One way without out buying any extra hardware is to hook the stereo out to your receiver and if your receiver has an upmix feature use this option.

If you would like true 5.1/7.1 from your notebook you will need to upgrade the sound card. There are several ways to do this. To give you the best options let me know the make and model of your notebook and reciever so I can recommend the right hardware for you.

Download and install multimedia( audio & video ) drivers for your Motherboard.
You forgot to tell us your boards brand and model.
Go to manufacturer of your Motherboard, in the customer support category, download the media driver in the XP operating system.
Unzip it when you finish downloading and it will be automatically detected by your computer.

Hi i have same sound card and had the same problem finding a driver which works. I finally found one which works perfect and put it on sendspace to share with others. http://www.sendspace.com/file/mdumt3 click on the regular download button otherwise it will ask for money.
