Pretty much every computer built within the last 5 years has built on network interface. However, to answer your question completely - look at the back of the computer where the network cable plugs in? Is it clustered around the video/sound, power, printer, usb, etc (integrated in); or is it located elsewhere (perhaps in the series of long narrow rectangular openings openings where the expansion cards go - separate).
Hope this helps.

On a computer that DOES have Internet access,
access the manufacturer's web-site:
http://support.dell.com
and select "Dimension" and "8250".
Select the device-driver for the NIC.
Download it.
Copy the download to a CD-recordable disk, or to a USB memory-stick.
Move the copy of the file to your Dell.

If you don't have a back up of the NIC driver a possible solution is to use another pc/laptop that has a working broadband connection in order to download the correct driver from the manufacturer's website and then transfer the driver executable or zip file via USB drive or CD-R back to your desktop pc. Did your desktop come with a manufacturer restore disc as sometimes you can update the driver from the device manager in the control panel by right clicking on the network adaptor and selecting the update driver software option and point it to search the manufacturers disc including all sub directories. Good luck.
Good day,
i am using an
Well first off know one installed a static IP your internet provider is the one that will do that for you when you get ready to go online if there are numbers in there remove them and select automatically detect settings. Most likely it is a Dynamic IP all you have to do is make sure that you have the driver installed for your card, your internet connection cable hooked up R-45 cable and once all of this is happening and lit your IP will do the rest if not then reboot the router or the modem not sure what you have they will send the proper routing goodies over the line and off you go. You just need to make sure that you are lit on your end and ready to go if for some reason nothing else works then contact your internet service provider and they will come out and make sure that you get set up. Thanks for using FixYa! John

There could a few things that could be preventing internet connection to your host windows xp.
Check these out:
-Dont follow these an order LOL
1) make sure the windows firewall is not causing the problem
a) do a test by turning it off. click on "Start" click on "Run" and type "Firewall.cpl" and turn it off. then see if you get a internet connection.
2) maybe you have set to "obtain an ip automatically"
a) click on "start" then right-click on "My network places" click on "view network connections" right-click on "Local area connections" slect propeties" then scroll down till you see "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" and click on "obtain an ip automatically"
3) when you open up VirtualBox check that you have it set to "NAT" i have mine set to "Bridged Adapter" so my virtual machine can get an ip from my router.
4) make sure your router isnt blocking in some way your virtual machine...maybe your router has a firewall.
5) also maybe host's firewall is causing the issue

After you reinstall the Operating System, you need to reinstall the drivers for the adapter as well. They do not get reinstalled automatically. You may go your computer's manufacturer's site and download the drivers and install them.
I had a working Dell computer - accessing the
You don't say what make/model of network adapter (NIC), whether it's wired or wireless, or if it was operating under the same service pack level before, so I have to make a lot of assumptions.
Is Windows really not recognizing it (ie: does it have an exclamation mark next to the NIC in device manager?) or is it being recognized by Windows but just cannot connect to the wireless router? If the latter, check your wireless configuration (SSID, WPA key, etc). Since you have WinXP SP1, it could be that there is not a driver for that particular NIC. Later service packs include updated drivers as well as bug and security fixes. Recommend you identify the NIC and if you have the driver disk for it, go into Windows device manager to select a reinstall from that disk. If you don't have it, use another computer to download its driver and after installing it and getting Internet access, you should also download and install the latest SP, which would be SP3.
