If not even the test page works then it's a hardware problem with the printing heads. In that case the there is only one thing left to try: put some new cartridges in and see if they work: if they don't then the fault is either in the connection between the cartridge carrier and the mainboard (with the thin flat cable on the side) or with the processor on the mainboard.
You will have to dismantle the printer completely and check the cable for damage and reseat it; then look at the mainboard for signs of damage - use this opportunity to do a full cleanup. If even after this the printer is still not working then the processor on the mainboard is defective - the printer is dead, time for a new one.

If this problem occurs with scanned images/documents then the scanning light detector is faulty.

You don't need to purchase it, you can download the installer/driver from Dell official website. Click this LINK, the download page for Dell Printer A960 will open up, select your Operating System from the "Operating System" box, eg. Windows xp, wait for few seconds, all the available download, click the download "Download" button beside the driver's name, a new dialog box will pop up, again click "Download" button below the "Download via your internet browser", download will begin automatically. If you are asked to agree the Dell terms conditions, click "Accept" or "Agree".

Note: There is no driver for Windows 7 for this model, let me know if you have problem with that also.

1. If you plugged in your A960 in the USB slot hoping windows 7 would provide the right driver via windows update: Just remove the printer in control panel > printer > rightclick the printer > remove device.

2. No need to use the dell cleanup utility. No need to uninstall under "uninstall software" since it wouldn't show there if the wrong driver was installed by windows automatically (but if you installed a wrong driver manually you may have to).

3. Download the Vista 64-bit Driver R153052.exe (or 32 bit if applicable), links see PudgyOne's post 28 Nov 2009 10:32PM.

4. Install the driver: clicking the R153052.exe first extracts the files to e. g. C:\dell\drivers\R153052. Then rightclick the setup.exe in that folder and change compatibility to Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

Sometimes you need to clean the rollers that pull the paper through the printer. There could be a piece of paper torn off stuck back there that causes any paper going through to jam.

Also, make sure the paper sits tightly in the feeder tray but not so tight that it bows.

try to print from documents like workpad. if that works, open the file menu or page menu of your browser and look for the Encoding option. if auto-select has a check mark with it, click it once to uncheck it and try fo print again. if that does not work, reinstall your printer driver, set it as your default printer and try to print using another browser. hope it helps

The problem is simple. The Shiny Silver bar that your Print Cartridges glide back and forth on is the PROBLEM!!! When the motor that moves the cartridges left and right HAVE TOO MUCH RESISTANCE, YOU GET THE HARDWARE ERROR: 502. How I fixed it is simple. Take some kleenex, and with power unplugged, clean the bar very well. Then Spray some WD-40 on a Kleenex, and lubricate the shaft!! After I did this, I could use my DelL A960 as if it were BRAND NEW!!! Hope this helps some one out there, as I had to figure it out myself!! Take care.

Try it in Safe Mode- this will be ugly since it's in 16 colors, but if the streak goes away it may indicate an issue with your video driver. If it does not go away, check your target output device setting (is it the printer, the screen, or a device you don't have) and change it to another output device to see if it goes away.

Connect the printer to your computer via USB cable and download the drivers to this site. You can use the Vista driver since windows 7 and vista are almost the same platform.

before you install that cartridge try to clean the head where the cartridge sits in with alcohol and a lint free cloth.

You most likely have some build up dirt on the bottom of the print head. If you can take the print head out do so and clean the bottom with a damp cloth. If you can't get it out take a damp cloth and get the print head to the middle of it's run and unplug printer then get the damp cloth under the print and do a side to side motion to clean the bottom of the print head.

Usually the images or documents requiring scanning or printing has to be displayed on a program like work productivity to allow for action buttons to be appears ready. For example, documents stored on hard drives are least printable or scan able directly from the medium where stored. Open the stored location is on the computer to display the document as pages before printer jobs are attainable.

The rollers have gotten dirty and cant make good enough contact to pull through a sheet of paper. Carefully clean the rollers with denatured alcohol.

Remove the cartridges and clean the contacts ( electrical contacts - golden colored ) with a lint free cloth and re-install them back in the printer.

Try this and check if it prints the test page.

Dell error 0502 is lots of this
On the multi function machine seems to be a coating on the metal rod that the cartridges travel on. Just wipe this rod with a Kleenex and the problem seems to go away.
Somehow it presents a drag on the cartridges and causes an error.
Myself I would put a little bit of oil after on a cloth and wipe along the bar.

Please all I ask is call back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one, so I will keep on helping.
