The fan on my Dell Inspiron 4000 is always running.

a couple suggestions:

try starting in safe mode and see if it does it still. It could be that you have some background program like Windows update or that new Windows active search function, which spends copious amounts of processor time cataloging your entire computer. Some anti-virus programs will do the same and eat up processor time. I'd try shutting down as many of these background processes to see what (or what combination) is causing the problem.

If this doesn't work, you might have a bad connection with your heatsink, which would cause your computer to stay at or your fan might be going bad, causing it to get really loud.

I'm not going to go into the possibility of it being used on a lap or bed or carpet where the fan intake vent is getting blocked. I know you've eliminated this as a possibility. Right?

Hard drive not detected

this sounds like a classic case of hardware failure, try taking the hard out and putting back in again, also check in the bios to see if the hard drive has been detected. if you get the same result the hard drive has failed and you will need another one

I have 3 operating systems installed so i need to lose two of them dont ask cos i dont know how they got there

I recommend you do a clean reinstall XP Pro using the Windows XP Pro installation CD. Delete all the partitions and create a new partition.

This is generally how your format the hard disk and install Windows. First you need a Windows XP or Windows Vista installation CD and the product installation code, which is printed on the Windows label on the bottom of your laptop. Boot up with the Windows installation CD start and follow the instructions to install Windows. Next Delete the existing Windows partition. Next Create a new partition. Next format this new partition - Format the partition in NTFS not a quick format. This will prepare the Windows for a clean install. Next create a User(name) and company name (normally Home is all you need). Further into the installation, you will be required to put in the Installation code.

During the final stages of installation you need to create an User or Users that will use this computer.

When you finished installing Windows you need to install the laptop's device drivers. You need to use a computer with Internet access to download these drivers from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site and install these drivers on your laptop. Next connect a LAN cable to the LAN port from your computer to your DSL or cable modem and you need to Activate the Windows installation on the Microsoft WEB site. Next up need to upgrade Windows from the Microsoft WEB site including Service pack. Next you need to install your programs

You can download the device drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Click on this link to download the drivers: -

My inspiron 4000 won't start up. i replaced cord;

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.
2. Make sure the power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.
3. Make sure the DC jack is not loose or broken. A loose DC jack will need to be re-soldered. A broken one will need to be replaced.
4. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.
5. The power button could be bad.
6. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced

I wanted to install a software on my dell inspiron

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
The standard procedure for it is to run the Disk Clean up utility, it will check for the temp files, chkdsk files and other offline files that can create enough space for the driver. You can see the Disk Cleanup procedure here.
If after the cleanup there isn't enough space then there is no other option either to extend the drive or to uninstall few software. To uninstall the installed software you can use the Control Panel.
I hope you will have a clearer picture now, If you are having problem, do ask me, I'm here to Help.
If you think I was of help, your token of appreciation in the form of rating will be esteemed.
Concerned, Nooh
