Try freeware CCLEANER: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ If I understand your statement, you need to clear some HDD space. Use the UNINSTALLER to remove unnecessary programs. In the TOOLS section, STARTUP section, disable ALL unnecessary startup programs to speedup starts and running.
A) Make sure the laptop is CLEAN inside. The GPU overheats you're gonna' have problems.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPUAlso I would replace the Thermal Paste on the Processor (CPU), and Thermal Pad on the GPU. (Graphics chipset)In fact I would do away with using a Thermal Pad, and use a piece of copper sheeting, that is thick enough to take it's place.Use Thermal Paste on the top of the GPU, and top of the small piece of copper sheet.[Respectively, VGA stands for Video Graphics Array,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGAComputers use digital video signals. When a VGA monitor is attached, the computer has to convert the digital signal to an Analog signal, for the Analog VGA monitor. This slows the graphics signal down, and the quality is not as good, as per se if you use a digital monitor. (Flat LCD screen monitor)Just thought you'd want to know. Now you can use the correct terminology. GPU not VGA.Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.Integrated Circuit,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuitThe I.C., or chipset used for graphics, is the graphics chipset; or more properly known as the G.P.U.Graphics Processing Unit. Also; CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short. Does NOT mean Personal Computer. (PC)Moving on..............The Nvidia Quadro FX Go1400 graphics chipset, with 256MegaByte of graphics memory; is NOT good enough for intense gaming.I don't know how, you've gotten decent frame rates out of that slug of a graphics chipset, but my hat is off to you.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-M70-Video-Graphics-Card-Heatsink-256MB-ATZZN00010L-/230888060214?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item35c2003536The Nvidia Quadro FX Go1400 is basically an Nvidia GeForce 6800.http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103971Scroll down to the third post for a better photo of the graphics card.Replace?I think you would much better off with a newer laptop, that has a better graphics 'engine'. (Graphics chipset)Don't believe your motherboard chipset will support a better graphics card, IF you can get one that will plug in.Dell made (HAD made) those graphics cards, and the slot they plug into on the motherboard; a Proprietary item. The motherboard chipset is an Intel 915PM,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intel_chipsets#Pentium_M.2FCeleron_M_mobile_chipsetsNope. You may be able to find an Nvidia GeForce 8400 graphics card, that is the MXM style; and will plug in.But THAT will Not run current intensive games that are out there. One thing I will run by you...............A) http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/how-to-make-an-external-laptop-graphics-adaptor-915616B) http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PE4H.htmlJust 'food for thought', Ari.For additional questions please post in a Comment.Regards, joecoolvette(Adding a piece of copper sheeting, to use in place of a Thermal Pad. -> NO, the reflowing is not what I am referring to.Just the copper sheet,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnkQNmKauEcYou work on the laptop? I could be off on this one, Ladonna, but it sounds like a mutation of MS Antivirus,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_AntivirusA 'scareware rogue anti-virus'.I ran into a mutation of this 'creature' back in 2005, with my niece's computer.(As you can read in the article, MS Antivirus has been out for quite some time. It has changed names through the years, or mutated, but is still the same Ol' piece of cr@p)Administrative privileges were lost. (You, as the owner of the laptop are the Administrator)No getting into Control Panel, Task Manager, Administrative tasks, and the internet. Why? MS Antivirus doesn't want you to remove it.I used the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, from CNET.com(Sounds like I am advertising, but I'm not. The program is free, and no junk attached )I downloaded it to my computer, and burned it to a CD disk. Then installed the CD disk, in my nieces computer's optical drive.I then installed it, and turned it on.Pop-up, after pop-up, after pop-up, appeared. So many in fact, that I couldn't see the Malwarebytes screen. Didn't know if it was running, or not.DO NOT click on the pop-ups. It will just slow Malwarebytes down.(Some pop-ups have fake Windows 'shields', some are real Windows 'shields'. Clicking on the real ones does no good either! Lol!)Average time for Malwarebytes to complete, is around 42 minutes, the first time. (Full scan)Just depends on how large the harddrive is, and how much stuff you have on it.You aren't done yet.System Restore also restores those 'virus' files. You have to turn System Restore off, then run Malwarebytes one more time. Then turn System Restore back on, and create a restore point. Now you're good to go.(2012, and she hasn't had a problem yet)Need guidance in downloading, installing, and running Malwarebytes, post back in a Comment.I use it everyday. If you also need guidance in going to System Restore, turning it off, and back on, post in a Comment.(I also use CCleaner daily. A free registry cleaner. Can guide you with this also)1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malwarebytes2) http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCleaner4) http://www.piriform.com/ccleanerRegards,joecoolvette
Remove the Battery from the Battery Compartment. Remove the small panel cover. (Access Door) Right there.http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/wsM70/sm/index.htmClick on Coin-Cell Battery.Regards, joecoolvette(Make sure the AC adapter { Charger } is not plugged into the laptop)
On some models there is a button at the top of the touchpad in the middle that toggles the touchpad on or off. On other models you simply tap twice in the upper left hand portion of the touchpad to toggle it on or off.And then there are some models that you use keystrokes to toggle the touchpad. Normally you would Press and Hold the ALT or FN function key near the bottom left portion of the keyboard then hit the key that toggles the touchpad. The key that toggles the touchpad will have the icon of a finger pointing at a square which represents the touchpad.Below is what I found in your user manual on the touchpad. It looks like your touchpad is controlled by software and there is no button or keystrokes that control the toggling.Customizing the Touch Pad and Track Stick
You can use the Mouse Properties window to disable the touch pad and track stick or adjust their settings.
Open the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Mouse.
In the Mouse Properties window:
Click the Device Select tab to disable the touch pad and track stick.
Click the Pointer tab to adjust touch pad and track stick settings.
Click OK to save the settings and close the window.

This is normally caused by a corruption in the windows software. Since you have restored it all ready, I would go ahead and run a full factory restore and wipe the system. If this does not work check your memory chips. There is a good tool here: http://www.memtest86.com/Hope this helps
If you have free space just make new partition and install there otherwise bootfrom any external cd with file manager and copy to something like a portable hdd or large usb.
need the windows disk and serial code then you need to boot up your computer and as soon as it begins to turn on press the corresponding button for boot devices this will bring you to a list showing you hard drive CD drive and other peripherals , insert the windows disk and then use the arrow keys to select the CD drive from there just follow the basic next, next, agree installer then i would suggest installing the drivers then all your programs hope i could help =]!
Windows 7 Control panel => Power Options On the right hand side of your power plans you will see CHANGE PLAN SETTINGS then on the next page you will see on the bottom CHANGE ADVANCED POWER SETTINGS under there you should see the lid settings. Hope that helps.
Nvidia Graphics cards caused a lot of problems on the HP DV series laptops. you are probably right in assuming this is the issue here. you will probably not get anywhere with Dell as the laptop is out of warranty, but you can try to repair the problem by stripping the laptop, cleaning out the heatsink and fan areas of the CPU and removing the heatsink to clean and regrease (with cpu grease) the cpu chip. The graphics chip will have a cooling pad on, which looks like blu tack, check this is intact and replace the heatsink, tightening up the screws evenly. A thin copper shim between the cooling pad on the gfx chip and the heatsink may also help sort out the problem, although the repair will not last very long
