Unfortunately, Epson printers demand that both black and colour cartridges are OK before the printer will work at all. Now, if you are really sure that you only want to print black, the most cost-effective solution for you is to buy an Epson Chip resetter on E-Bay. This will reset your empty colour cartridge to "full", as far as the printer is concerned. You can then happily continue with your black-only printing.

There is no easy way to remove Epson print head, you have to completely dismantle the printer, to remove the print head, if you see any lever beside the print head, then you can use that to loose it.

is the tape on cartridge? if not put tip of cartridge in hot water to clean tip

You should be able to go to Epson on Google and find the download for your model. After the download make sure you set it as the default printier.
