How to attach loose scanner glass
The glass plate in scanners is almost always held in by some kind of 2 sided adhesive tape AND plastic clips. Th adhesive probably failed, but the glass plate is probably at an angle and not resting on the plastic clips correctly. These act as a failsafe in this very situation, so the glass plate doesn't break or damage the scanner guts.
Anyway, if you want a permanent repair, this is the tape you should use:
Amazon com 3M Scotch Heavy Duty Mounting Tape Clear 4010 Double Sided...
It will definitely support the weight of the glass and then some. Be careful with this stuff, it will remove paint (or worse) from drywall. You should only need 4 strips, one for each edge of the glass. Apply it firmly to the glass, then stick the glass onto the plastic bracket.

Hi
Remove the transparency adapter from the top of the scanner and take notice of the two small screws where the adapter was unplugged. Remove the screws with a small Phillips driver, and this is where you must be careful. Lift the rear of the glass frame approximately one inch from its base and firmly push it forward to remove it from the base. There are two plastic hinge retainers at the front of the glass frame that must be shifted forward to free the frame from the base. If the base is lifted to high after the screws are removed these plastic hinges could be damaged. After the glass frame is removed clean it with a water vinegar solution and replace it with the same care with which it was removed.

needle3000:
The Epson "Perfection" 1240U Scanner won't work with Mac OS X 10.4.11 possibly due to the program it is being run from. Like you, I had the same problem: it wasn't being recognized. Epson's drivers installed and ran correctly. Scanner even appeared under Bus in USB Device Tree in System Profile. Finally, I discovered that the Scanner runs if opened directly from EPSON Scan.app under Applications. The problem, in my case, was my ancient version of Photoshop (5.5.) from which I was running it.
Hope that helps!

Did you try uninstalling and re-installing the drivers. Uninstall everything including the canoscan tool bar, Arcsoft photo studio and Omnipage. And re-install.
Hope that helps,
Sai.
