Gateway 450SX4 Notebook Questions & Answers
Upgrading PC CPU
Put in as much RAM as you can afford. I've found that this is the quickest, easiest way to speed up a computer.
Drivers
Gateway support site for starters, and then Windows Update, and finally look up components in hardware/Device mgr. Go to the mfrs websites and download the most current ones for your hardware and operating system. If you have an Intel processor, Intel's site "Support" will scan and determine the newest Intel drivers for you. NVidia and AMD's ATI also have drivers. Realtek also provides them for their products.
Need to replace the cmos battery on a gateway 450sx4 laptop.
Some are way deep inside, and you have to remove the top part of the case from the bottom.
Some others, you can remove the top power strip, (unscrew screws in the battery compartment, and sometimes on the bottom) and then unscrew the keyboard, and when you remove that, sometimes you can get right to it.
The only problem is, some of the laptop batteries are odd ducks, and not just the standard, they have wires or a metal tag on them. You can always order a new one onces you get to it.
The 450sx4 screen is bright but no video
Many computer users spend long hours online every day and don\'t realize that looking at a bright laptop screen can be hard on the eyes. If you spend a lot of time in front of a laptop screen, consider reducing the brightness of the screen at the earliest opportunity. There\'s a quick and easy way to perform this task so you can save your eyes as well as your battery power. Press and hold the "Fn" key on the laptop keyboard. This key is usually located at the top right or bottom left of the keyboard. Press the "Up Arrow" and "Down Arrow" keys, which are usually located in the lower right of the keyboard, to increase or reduce the brightness of your laptop screen. Adjust the level so that you can gaze comfortably at the screen without any glare. Disconnect the battery charger from your laptop and repeat the above procedure. On some laptops, the screen brightness varies considerably, depending on whether or not the device is charged. Hope this helps.

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty
One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
hope this will help

Probably going into safe mode will get you in to the PC without a password, then go to Control Panel/user Accounts. You can change it there. Don't mess with Bios in the 1st things you come to when you are going into safe mode. In case you don't know how to get to safe mode, turnon PC and repeatedly push the F key at top of keyboard and the 8 key at same time. Over & over. (Not the F in the normal typing part, but the F key at top of keyboard!) Entering safe mode is easy. Usually a password doesn't protect safe mode. If it still does, there are programs you can get to help you, free. You are in luck! Just today i got email from dot-tech.org about a program that will do this for you. Here's the article and link.
http://dottech.org/freeware-reviews/18732 One or the other of these solutions should help you easily. You may have to make a boot CD with the program that is on the dot-tech article, or you can sure try the Windows version of it. Were I you, if you can make a CD, I'd go that route. A Cd burner free is also on that page the link above goes to. It's easy with that burner, you'll see. :) Try safe mode 1st though, it's even easier. :) Happy Holidays!
Do not remember username and password...how can I
Try logging in as administrator with blank (no) password. If you can get into windows then once booted into windows -
{below works for xp and vista at least}
go to START and then RUN and type in control userpasswords2 then click OK.
That will open User Accounts window which will list the users of your computer. That will remind you of the name you used to login. You can also reset the password there if you still can't recall it.
You can also create a new user however that will not give you your old desktop, shortcuts etc that you had before.
I have a gateway 450sx4 laptop...im having a
You can try 2 things: 1. Start in safe mode ( start tapping f8 when you start) and see if that works. If it is ok try to update-or reinstall- drivers for your video card. 2. Reinstall OS-whatever you have.If that failed-your video card is probably out.
I was on my laptop,
Start taking your laptop apart piece by piece and test it after each removed component:
1. Remove the hard drive and test the laptop.
2. Remove the DVD drive and test the laptop.
3. Remove the wireless card and test the laptop.
4. Unplug the display panel from the motherboard/video card and test the laptop.
etc....
Continue taking it apart until you have only three major components connected: motherboard (with video card), processor, and memory. If you still experience the same problem, most likely it's bad motherboard.
By the way, before you start, try reconnecting the memory module. If you have two modules installed, try removing them one by one and test the laptop with each one separately
Yea i have a gateway
It's likely that your screen is "fried" (faulty) ... try to connect your laptop to an external VGA monitor, and see if the screen shows up (on the external monitor) properly. You may have to toggle the output display (device) from computer screen to external monitor ..using Fn+F3.
If it displays on your external monitor properly, it means your laptop screen is no good. You can replace the laptop screen, or just continue to use the external monitor.
If it does the same (blurry & different color, etc.) on your external monitor, then, your video card/module on your laptop is bad. This usually happens less often.
