I can't get my speakers to work. I have to use

Hmm, sounds like either the speaker/speaker cable/speaker connector) developed a problem (not very likely as the parts are rather solid) or the headphone socket connector is damaged or is beginning to lose contact with the motherboard. If it's just a matter of the socket desoldering itself from the motherboard then the solution is relatively easy - you need to re-solder the socket. This involves stripping the laptop as you would need to get to the bottom of the motherboard. 600E is relatively easy to dismantle (most thinkpads are :)
Also, the headphone socket has small "switch" where if a headphone jack is inserted, it disconnects the internal speakers. In some cases the "switch" gets stuck in that position and you end up with speakers disconnected regardless of whether the jack is in or not. In any case, it's a pain to fix and involves either replacing the socket or stripping the socket.
Well-good luck :)
Hope this helps.

As long as the battery is working properly it doesn't need to be changed. Laptop batteries are like any battery the more you use them the faster they wear out. If available you should always use the power supply.
