Thers a power indicator but no display the monitor

Notorious issue here! There's a couple of things to try. First, turn the computer on, once it has started, hold down the "FN" key and press "F3"...this may vary from model to model but it's basically just adjusting the brightness of the screen. If this doesnt work, you can purchase a new screen on ebay and replace it yourself. Hope this helps.

Unit will not power on// has a solid amber light//

You may have a bad DC connector:

Symptoms of a broken power jack
1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.
2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead. No power LED or battery charge LED activity.5. Laptop randomly powers off without any warning.

If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it I’m happy to assist further over the phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/joe_8b8c2cd6ce148309

My screen is low light

Please try to attach an external monitor & see if you can get any display on it. If you can get display on an external monitor, then the root cause of the problems you have might be either a failing LCD backlight or a failing inverter board.

Please refer to the following article for more details on how to diagnose & troubleshoot LCD backlight & inverter board issues:

IBM T20 notebook NO network connect by windows

No Wireless link.

Check the drivers, Go to Control panel, select Device manager and browse the list for anything out of the ordinary, like a sub menu at one side. Go into the sub menu and click Refresh Driver and check for conflicts. Windows should be able to detect and fix conflicts.
If that is no good, go to the manufacturers web site and download the lates drivers.

Hope this helps.

I have several older pieces of software that I

most windows 98 software can be ran in XP using "compatibility mode", but you might have to adjust other compatibility settings to get it to work. i have never had problems running windows 98 software in xp, or even vista, even without compatibility mode, so your actual hardware may be to blame.

to access compatibility mode, right click on the program's .exe file or desktop shortcut and choose "properties" and then select the "compatibility" tab. there you will find options to run in windows 98 mode, and several video options. you may have to try several different video configurations along with windows 98 mode before you find the one that works.

if the compatibility options dont fix it, then the processor is probably too fast for the program, and you will have to download software (if available for your motherboard/model) to underclock, or slow down, your processor. to find the right software to do this will take quite a bit of research, and may be beyond your skill level.

there is also a free program called microsoft virtual pc that can run other versions of windows in a "virtual computer" inside your windows xp desktop. you can download virtual pc from the microsoft website, and i believe that it comes with, or has available for free, a windows 98 virtual os. if it does not make the windows 98 virtual software available for free, then you will, unfortunately, have to purchase a windows 98 cd on ebay.

to actually wipe xp and replace it with windows 98 may not be feasible because the windows drivers might not be available for your computer, and the proper drivers are necessary to access all of your hardware. there is no support for windows 98 anymore, so the drivers are quite hard to find, if they were even ever made.

My IBM T20 won't start

Whenyou connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? Ifnot then - The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's powersocket could be faulty. Check power adapter's DCplug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltageshould be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on thebottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that isprinted on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK thenconnect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/batterycharging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's powersocket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position thisLED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a drysolder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but itrequires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket andrepair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

Ethernet network adapter not working on T20

Also , not all IBM T20/T21 laptops shipped with a ethernet card fitted.
some had a modem only card. some a combined modem/ethernet card.

if the tiny LEDs light when plugged into a known active network connection then the card is present.
if they dont light up then it probably isnt present.

to check for the card..remove the panel secured by a single screw (just above center of the base)
the panel is in the top right quadrant of the bottom of the PC if you look at the bottom with the power connector at the top and the battery at the bottom.

remove the screw. open the panel.
there may or may not be a card present.
if there is if there is only a single white connector (with 2 small wires) then it is the Modem only card.
if there are 2 connectors one with 2 wires and another bigger with 8 wires..then you have the network card. check the connectors a fully pushed home.
its fiddly good luck

What is the maxium upgrades

You can't upgrade the processor: it's already at almost maximum and you can't change models - different socket. The maximum RAM you can install in it is 512 MB of PC100 SODIMM-SDRAM so the speed difference will be negligible.

Thinkpad T20 display is very,

1. Test using an external monitor. If it works, then either the screen bulb or the inverter board might be defective.
2. Test the inverter. Easiest way to do it if you have a good screen with a good bulb. Connect the good screen to the inverter board & test it. If it lights up, then the inverter board is good. If it did not, then the inverter board is bad & needs to be replaced.
3. If the inverter board is good, then we are left with the possibility that the screen bulb is bad. To fix this, we will need to replace the LCD screen.

Hi, There is an issue with your User profile on the computer. The option that you can do is to boot to safe mode with networking, you need to press F8, after you turn on the computer to get to the boot menu screen to choose safemode with networking. then choose to log in to admin account. After logging in kindly create a new user account. And then reboot to normal mode again and log on to the new user account you created. If you cannot log on to safemode with networking, you can choose the Last Known Good Configuration option.
Thank you for using Fixya, you recommendation is highly appreciated for the free support.
