My x Boyfriend Put A Password In the Bios Of My IBM Thinkpad T40 At The Time We Wernt Getting Along Now That We Are He Has No Clue What The Password Is Please Help Me I Havent Been Able To Use My Thinkpad In Months
How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Using Hardware If you cannot boot the ThinkPad, you will have to reset the IBM ThinkPad password via hardware. If only the power-on password is set, do the following to remove the power-on password. Power off the computer Remove the DIMM cover on the bottom side of the computer. Short-circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit. Under the short-circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The power-on password is removed. Reinstall the DIMM cover. If both the power-on password and the supervisor password are set, do the following to remove the passwords: Power on the computer by pressing and holding F1. Enter the supervisor password. The Easy-Setup menu appears. Click on the Password icon. Click on the Power on icon. Enter the supervisor password and press the Space bar. Press Enter twice. Click on Exit; then click on Restart.

I have an IBM Thinkpad t40 that has a black screen if I push down on the key board the screen comes on sometimes and stays on sometimes. Someone told me it might be an issue with a loose chip under the keyboard, can anyone assist. Thanks in advance.
Chips DO get loose and what you're experiencing is a common problem with IBM T40's. The solder that holds the graphics processor to the motherboard is cracked and no longre consistantly makes a good connection. This problem can only permanently be resolved with a new motherboard, or reflowing the solder of the GPU chip on the old one with a heat gun. Do a search for "thinkpad solder reflow" in any search engine.
Good luck.

Compaq Presario V6000, keeps rebooting, blank screen, and no post beeps. Replaced ram, battery, and power adapter. There is no hard drive light. I think it is a hardware problem, because it will not boot to safe mode. Thanks

I have problem with My ThinkPad T40 2373 - 72A, error 0189 appear when it's start to boot. The only solution that I find so far is replace the systemboard. But I wonder if there any other solution of this problem.
This worked for me on a R40 with the 0189 issue.
When the message pops up, hit escape to continue.
1.
Download the IBM Hardware Maintenance Disk and create a floppy. The
filename for version 1.75 is i7tm23us.exe. I found it at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/i7tm23us.exe
2.
If you do not have a floppy drive on your laptop, then use nero to
create a bootable CD from the files and boot sector of the floppy disk.
3. Boot your laptop from the CD, then choose the Assign UUID option.
This should do the trick for you.
