Sony MDR-RF960RK Consumer Headset Questions & Answers
Are there replacement ear pads that will fit on my 2005 Sony headphones ?
There are lots of generic (Chinese) replacement ear pads for Sony on ebay or Amazon, you'll just have to take some measurements and try to match what's available. Check the diameter in centimeters, and the shape (round or oval). You may not find a specific listing for MDR-RF960RK but a lot are interchangeable.
It appears that my battery
Even though you can use regular AAA batteries (that you would have to replace often), there is a huge convenience factor with using the charging cradle that comes with the Sony headset. A solution I found was that I ordered some 550 mAh AAA batteries through Ebay (they came from England and cost me $8 total for four batteries). To make the charging cradle work with the new batteries installed in the Sony headset you MUST use the bottom part of the plastic battery holder piece on the BP-HP550-11 battery pack (all you need to do is peel off the BP-HP550-11 label and the bottom half of the plastic battery holder piece slips off of the Sony batteries). Then just slip in the new AAA batteries into the plastic battery holder bottom and then insert into the headset. The reason why you must use the bottom of the battery holder plastic piece is because the plastic piece pushes on a little switch. This switch activates the charging mechanism inside the headset to enable the cradle charger to charge the batteries.
NOTE: I am not an electronics expert so I do not know if there would be any problem using other rechargeable AAA batteries (with higher mAh ratings). So I decided to be safe than sorry and ordered the 550 mAh batteries through Ebay.
I have Model MDR-RF970R and
Sony has some special case they put around the original 2 batteries to hold
them together.
You don't need to buy special batteries. You can put regular AAA NiMH
in.
To remove the compartment cover on the headsets make sure you hold down the
pressure button on the left headphone to release the cover. Mine has the words "PUSH"
on them.
With the cover removed you can then see the original BP-HP550 sony battery. Which you can remove and put 2 regular AAA batteries in.
I need replacement batteies for
My headphones (after several years) got to where they would go dead in about 1/2 hour. I used Panasonic AAA H8 Ni-MH 630 mAh. They last longer and get much louder than the stock batteries. I was able to remove the old batteries without breaking the holder. They work better than new.
Where to plug in head
You can see the following Pin terminals on the Panasonic TC P50C2
Insert the connecting cord (phono plugs shown below) provided with your Sony MDR-RF960RK to the above terminal such that the colors of both plugs and terminals are matched.Insert it firmly.
Thanks for choosing Fixya.
How do you change batteries
There is a button on the left housing to open the battery compartment lid.
The manual says only to use the batteries provided, but it appears NiMH AAA are usable.
That's what I would be trying myself.
I would be careful in getting the polarity correct, but from diagram in the manual, the provided batteried are well marked.
