The Nikon D40 does not have an autofocus motor, relying on the lens having one. This Sigma lens does not have such a motor, relying on the camera having one. Nikon designates lenses with an autofocus motor AF-S, Sigma calls theirs HSM.

Have a close look at the iris ring to see if any think is broking off
or try moving the lens when it is locked on the camera to see if you lose the fee if so it may need a new mount

Your 28-90 AF-D lens can't autofocus with the D40, which requires AF-S lenses with a focus motor in the lens. Sigma lenses with "HSM" (HyperSonic Motor) in the name also have the focus motor.

hi ! iam too a D40 holder,u can opt for AF-s versions or HSM sigma,both of them autofocus on d40,can go for 18-200 AFs VR or if u need still longer end go for 70-300 but it is costly than the sigms 70-300APO DG HSM MACRO..,its a much better reviewed lens and dont forget the cost..anyway do some research before considering..good luck

It is not normal for the focus ring to move slightly when using autofocus mode on the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX lens. This could be caused by a problem with the lens or with the camera body. Taking it apart is not the problem - re-assembling it will be. Unless you have access to an optical laboratory, where laser instruments can measure the exact tolerances required, don't even think about it. You will be left with a pile of optical components, and a far higher repair bill than if you had just let the experts sort out the problem in the first place.

Best you don't open it at all as you can damage the lens. Send back to manufacture

Tiffen is a brand of filters not a lens. if your sigma lens will work on 1 camera and not on the other then check the lens mount, electronic contacts, clean them if needed. check the settings in the camera if there needs to be a change.

Take it to a Qualified technician and get it fixed properly. I have this same lens for my Pentax K3, its a very good lens and worth getting it fixed by a proper tech who knows what they are doing.

It depends totally on whether your camera takes interchangeable lenses, and if so, do these lenses have the same fitting ? Your camera manual should tell you if you can fit other lenses to the body - if so, follow the steps to remove the lens which is currently attached, and compare the fitments with this lens and the two others you have been given. If you are still not sure, then take it all to your local friendly camera dealer, who will be able to advise you. Do NOT try to force the new lenses onto the body - this is a sure way to render them inoperable.
