It sounds like it has failed. If there is anything important on there take it to a data recovery expert who will charge a lot of money to attempt recovery of information. otherwise put a sledgehammer through it and trash it.

It's the power supply connection in the HD case has failed. Try the HD in another case (if you have one handy) to check whether this is the problem. If so, find a replacement case.

maybe problem is caused by your Power supply.
so i recommend you to do these:
1- remove the main hard drive and only connect "250GB lacie porsche hard drive".
and see is it recognized or not.
2- go to the bios (with pressing "delete key" at start of turning on) and navigate to power center.
then enable power saving mode.

You would need to find a new connector to replace the broken one - a very difficult task since they are not sold as parts. Just replace it and save yourself the hassle.

In this case try some data recovery program to see if it can help rescue your data on your external.

All i have to say, is the drive is dead! the drop has damadged the internals and it will cost thousands to recover the data off the drive. If you dont want to spend loads on recovering the data, you could put the drive in a zip-lok bag and put it in the freezer for about 2 hours, then remove the drive and see if the drive is detected, if it is quickly copy all your data onto another 1tb drive and hope for the best, if its still not detected you out of luck i guess.

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.

The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

There are several things that could have gone wrong. The least worrisome is a software glitch. Please shut your Mac completely off, then unplug the Lacie and turn your Mac back on. Leave the Lacie drive disconnected for about 5 mins then reconnect it and see if it re-appears.

If it does keep your data on both the Lacie and the Mac for the next few weeks and if it does it again get it replaced. If it does not, you should be fine.

If the Lacie drive doesn't reappear then it may have failed. I can suggest a simple program to check if it's dead or just lost it's formatting. In the latter case the program can retrieve files from it before reformatting, in the former you will need the help of a pro to repair the drive before any files could be retrieved from it.

The program I'm suggesting was recently reviewed here Once you get to that page just click on the picture at the top and it will take you to the download area where you can get a copy. It's free to download and scan but you will have to pay them before it will recover files.

Of course if there's nothing important on it yet and it's dead, I would suggest simply having it replaced.

If you get no joy using the Troubleshooting Guide then try this...
You will need to check You Tube to find a Dismantle on your product and follow the step guide on here, the procedure should be similar.
Check 1st that your External HDD has an P.C. internal HDD inside, from You Tube, before dismantle of your External HDD. Connections for an Internal Laptop HDD may have same connections as P.C. not sure though.
Once your happy that it has continue reading and follow the step guide on the link below.

Any 3.5" hard drive (sata) enclosure off of ebay will work. Shouldn't be more than $20. If you want somebody else to do it for you there is Hard Drive Repair NYC.

It sounds like you have damaged the drive.

The clicking sound is a mechanical failure where the the read arm inside the drive is hitting the magnetic platters. You should backup your data immediately as drive failure is imminent.

I'm a pc expert in general, so I'm qualified to try to answer this. I'm working with real limited info here,so if the answer isn't what you thought or somethings missing, just reply to this question again. This time include the make/model of the pc,the operating system type(assuming windows), & the model of your lacie(there's about 1000 or so in 1gb). Here we go, assuming windows? is the os & that this is an external hdd connected via usb. These steps apply to all versions of windows, except nt,98 & 95. To get the system to "see" the drive, unplug the drive from the usb(this can be done with the pc on), wait a few seconds,plug the usb back in. A window should open indicating that windows is installing drivers for your device & another will pop up saying it's ready for use,hopefully. You don't have to use the software that comes with the drive,unless you want to use a security program or back-up software bundled with it. I prefer not use any bundled software as there are plenty of partition & security programs out for free at www.download.com that are easier & do the job better. Also, the tools built into windows vista & 7 are great for installing removeable media. Even xp isn't too bad, but 3rd party software is best for that os. Now that I rambled a bit there, right click "my computer" & click properties. Go to "device manager" & then expand the "disk drives", see if it shows as a logical disk. If not,no biggie, go down to "dvd/cdrom" & see if it showed in there,not likely but I've seen it happen. If you still don't see it,close the windows & re-right click "my computer", click manage. Go to "storage", click "removable storage", it should show up. If not, then in the same menu, go to "disk management", now it's gotta show up here,if not you may have a defective product. Hopefully, this isn't the case & windows does see this drive. If the drive shows up under the "disk management" as a logical drive, you need to click on the drive in the grey area under the white window that shows all the drives, then you need to right click the same drive & hit properties/advanced & make sure the drive is optimized for fast removal, not fixed storage. All that being done,we can now go to "my computer" & right click,hit explore. The drive should be visible. Right click on the drive,hit properties this will show any partitions that already exist & what file system they're formatted in. All you need in a partition with an NTFS partition to store your files in. This is where a 3rd party software will come in handy(Hint EASUS from download.com) or you may be able to download the original set-up software right from www.lacie.com . If your using the entire drive as one partition, skip 3rd party software. Simply right click the drive & hit format,select NTFS as the file system,then check the box for "quick format",all done. You can use the drive now. If nothing I typed worked, then if it's under warranty,send it back ,if not google for a program called "spin-rite" & follow the instructions for creating a boot disk to run before the os loads. This program will try to fix damaged areas of the disk & has saved quite a few drives. I'm not sure if it works on usb drives or not. If not,then power the pc down,get a screw driver, remove the drive from it's enclosure & pysically install it as a slave on the pc. Re-boot with your spin-rite disk in & run the program. Now if it comes up as a S.M.A.R.T. failure, the drive is done. At that point the drive has a bad controller card & you'll never find one. Let me know if that helps. Thanks for using Fixya!

Loud clicking means the drive is on the verge of complete failure. It might be possible for a data recovery expert to retrieve your data but you should not plug it in at all until they attempt data recovery. Running the drive will only speed up it's failure and it should only be run to do the data recovery. Some techs (like myself) can do software data recovery until the drive stops spinning, usually for $200 to $300. After that, it will have to go to a clean room which can run from $500 to $2500 to retrieve data depending on the amount of data and the procedure used to access the data on the dead drive.
