How can I connect a Thorens 145 turntable to it?

Your Harman Kardon AVR 85 doesn't have "phono" inputs. That means that you can not connect a turntable to it directly. You will need a "phono preamp" to amplify the very tiny signal from the phono cart enough for the HK receiver to play it. Something like this: PYLE PRO PP444 Ultra Compact Phono Turntable Preamp will do it. There are certainly better ones, like: Amazon com TCC TC 750 BLACK Audiophile Phono Preamp Pre amp Preamplifier...

One channel out on the HK AVR85. Tested all inputs. Is there a fuse inside???

In an answer to to your "quest.... Is there a fuse for speaker output" • the answer is none. but there is a relay in between the main amp outputand the speaker terminal at the back.In your statements : " Inputs all good ", • Check first the line outputs at the back of the receiver , just todetermine if the preamps are working. • connect outputs to a separate amplifierthe answer will determine your "quest ...is this most likely a bigger issue??? ? "I almost forgot to ask what channel are you referring to?Say, front left channel like you said is dead, after checking the line out there is no output either, then thetrouble or fault can be starting from the input line to these output. These could be capacitor coupling, resistors , op-amp ICor possibly just a cold solder joints. Here is a sample troubleshooting :only for Computer Speakers (but may also apply) • If there is an output , then trace on the main left amplifiercould be a colder joint also, check until you reach the relay.Let us know if you have any more questions or if you needfurther assistance!

The unit turns itself completely off

Cold solder joint on the board, major problem on all AVR85s.

Avr130 system and when front speakers hooked up

Its an internal problem that plagued those receivers. IMHO not worth repairing.

Display doesn't work

The actual lcd is most likely losing its filamenty voltage from cracked solder connections. The very end pins on both sides of lcd display are connected to a filament inside of display tube. The display will go out if filament voltage is lost. If you can see the connections where lcd solders to front board look at the outside pins for ring cracks. I have h/k avr 85.

It is possible that the amplifier had encountered a fault with a higher current drain which had triggered it to a protection fault condition. The fault can be your output drivers- the MOSFETS/IC's fitted for both the channels, Use a meter after disconnecting to check for short in the drivers. Disconnect the positive and negative voltages to the output and see if the protect changes. Even a fault in the preamp stages that drives in high current into the output can shut the Amplifier. Sometimes this can be a noise like a HUM or HISS before the protect works. Faulty capacitors in these circuits also can cause similar issues and needs close observation.
You need to confirm and replace the specific stages or outputs. If not there can be issues in the mother board, maybe the protect circuit by itself is shutting off due to a faulty bias , maybe a leak in any voltage/current sensing circuit. Also disconnect the speakers and test, if the protect is off then check for short on the speakers.

Thank you for using Fixya

Hi,
you may have a bad Earth power 110 V AC cable connection which makes such hum / buzz even nothing connected..
Check the connections between components and make sure they are secure before proceeding to the next Step. Sometimes, loose connections can cause a hum.
  • Separate the audio cables from the power cables; electromagnetic interference from the power cables can cause stereo hum. Use cable ties to secure the audio cables away from the power cables.
  • Plug in a surge protector to the outlet, and then plug all the components into that surge protector
  • Connect a ground plug to the surge protector and then plug the ground plug into the main outlet. A ground plug is available at any hardware store, and turns a three prong connection into a two prong. Ground plugs help eliminate 60 cycle hum.
  • 5 Connect the ground wire from your turntable to the ground wire connection on the receiver. If this doesn't work, looking on the back there should be a grounding point,

Unplug your receiver.. Split a wire and attach one of the splits to the receiver where you will see the text, "ground" or something similar. Attach the other end to something metal such as a pipe that goes into the ground. Secure with electrical tape. Plug in.
connect the ground wire to a screw on the electrical outlet.

I have an Harmon Kardon AVR 85 and the power will

First of all, if you have just been powering up with the remote, try pushing the actual button on the unit. From owning a HK receiver, I found out that if the power switch is out, it will not turn on from the remote. Duh moment when I discovered this.
It also might be an internal fuse or circuit breaker that is shorted or tripped. If there is not an outside breaker or fuse, send this to a repair person. Sometimes there are capacitors in the power amp circuit that can hold a lot of voltage for a good length of time. You could get shocked. So, you might want to let the repairman handle this. Otherwise check for an outside breaker or fuse, and replace if needed.
You can also check Harmon Kardon's site for customer support.

Are you using all digital sources and not analogue sources? For digital sources you may have to re-assigne them. Check what digital sources and plugged into what inputs.

    Press "Digital Select"

Use left and right arrows to select the correct digital input.

    Press Select.

Repeat for each digital source, you should get audio immediately if you selected the correct input.

The power button goes red after couple of minutes

Try disconnecting the speakers and reconnecting them one at a time. If there is a small short on a speaker wire it will cause it to click into protection.

If that is not the problem then it may be the bias rate of the amp, unfortunately that issue would render it not worth repairing since they have a high rate of failure after repair.
