Unless you are a camera technician, this is a problem that has to go in for repair. The mechanical hold is defective or broken. Please weigh the cost of repair vs buying a used camera You can buy a used/refurbished AE-1 Program in the $80-$140 range. Call several repair places by looking on the internet, some will give a free repair estimate.

Most likely the motor is wearing out and not powerful enough to wind more film. Not much you can do but replace the camera with something newer. Repair parts are most likely not available and the price would be way out of line of a replacement.

if the camera is jammed for any reason, then the rewind button will not pop out. on this model it was common that the mirror cock lever at the bottom jumped. in which case the camera will jam up.remove three screws holding the bottom cover, remove cover. in the middle of the camera is a lever that needs to be latched by pushing it forward. the camera should release and revert to normal usage.if this is not the case then there may be something jammed in the winding or shutter gears. in which case you would have to remove the top cover and/or front covers.

First thing I would do is sacrifice a roll of film. Load the film as you have been. Then with the back open and tension on the film (do not touch the film over the shutter, advance the film. It may be that you are putting the film on the takeup spool incorrectly. Watch how the film advances on the spool. If it is on the spool incorrectly it will disconnect then not advance. If that does not work it may be a errant takeup spool.

Have tou tried the battery? Is so try clean the battery contacts make sure theres no old residue on them

try pushing the lever forward a bit. try while camera is off, and then on. if not, you might have to sacrifice your film to unclog the inside of it. It's also possible a gear has broken inside. Could be that when the load builds up there is friction to jam the film. You must not take chance with the shot film and so try to click with the cap on the rewound portion and if the film is not advancing then it is possible that the camera must be checked with a dummy film to confirm on why the jamming takes place.It can be also due to failure of the loading mechanism
