Have canon rebel xs ,

If this is a Canon Rebel XS there is no memory card in a 35mm film camera If this is a Rebel XSi then generally this error is caused by the memory card lock switch here is a diagram to show the correct orientation of this switch

Also after you have unlocked the card you should format the memory card in the camera it is going to be used in. Failing to do so may produce other errors and possibly corrupt pictures and files Formatting clean the memory card to produce optimum performance between the camera and card

Should the LCD screen show

Your camera is a DSLR with a mirror prism, so when you look through the viewfinder you are seeing the scene as what it is much like looking through a pair of glasses. To have "Live View" what you would be looking at is a digital image of what the camera is pointed at. That's a pretty simple explanation but one the DSLR is optical where as the Live View is a digital image. What you have is an entry level DSLR camera much the same as professional photographers use. I use both types and they both have their place but when I'm shooting for the ultimate image for print I'm looking through the viewfinder not a live view.

My camera simply won't work. All that appears on

Okay reading between the lines and I shouldn't but it feels to me as if you have had this camera for a while and are familiar with its functions would I be correct in assuming this? Did you download the pictures from your assignment using your camera and a USB cable or did you use a card reader?
Have you another memory card you can put in the camera?
What I'm hinting or leading up to is there any chance you disconnected either the USB cable or pulled the memory card out before shutting it off as in eject or safely remove?
Will the camera allow you to move into the set up or command functions? I know you said nothing else works but it shut off and didn't come back on I'm hoping you messed up on removing the memory card from the reader OR the internal battery has just dies and taken all the clock functions and your setting with it.
I don't know if you have a manual so here is a link to a PDF manual

http://www.google.ca/webhp?hl=en#hl=en&source=hp&biw=1383&bih=834&q=canon+eos+rebel+xs+manual&aq=8&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=Canon+EOS+Rebel+XS&gs_rfai=&fp=6a0673dc5c3f3912

Sorry it's a biggy you'll need to copy past it but I'm using the manual now tracking down the internal battery so it is a good link

Page 42 of this manual there is a "Disp" button here is a screen shot did you maybe touch this and shut the screen off?
Diagram
tri3mast_109.jpg

If you can access the command functions page 114 has the camera reverting to default setting sequence.

On page 115 you can actually shut off the monitor display, why anyone would want that I'm not sure at this point. I'm just throwing out possibilities.

I've given you some things to look into see what happens.

What is the fastest write speed? I have noticed

Although a good SD card is worth considering it's not the only thing that determines the speed. In fact the shooting light has more to do with it then the memory card. The Rebels although not Pro cameras are pretty darn fast with the differences immeasurable in most cases with Pro cameras.
The Rebel will show the burst rate in the right corner of the viewfinder and if you noticed this rate changes with the light and shutter speeds. Sow the shutter speed down and that burst rate will drop as well. The size of the image file also dictates how fast you can burst in frames per second. You are shooting RAW and no doubt jpg's so the camera is doing double duty with some pretty impressive files size. If you want speed shoot jpg's and set your camera correctly for white balance, shoot for the end use. If you are looking for speed you aren't shooting portraits or landscapes where you have time to calculate your shot so the need for a BIG print isn't necessary so drop your image quality.
The Rebel's processor is very impressive and it has a large buffer where it writes the file as you are shooting so in fact the camera is writing to the buffer at the same time it's writing to the memory card. That's why when you stop shooting it takes several seconds for the camera to catch up.

If you are looking for speed keep your shutter speed up, reduce the image file size, shoot jpg, class 6 works nice (I use this type) I have only one class 8.

On a personal note the Canon Digital Rebel has put so much power and performance in the hands of entry level photographers and they are using that power to come up with some darn nice photography and in the right hands it's putting the hurt to some long time pro shooters.

Error 99 all the time , 1 yr old ...started it

Hum, error 99 eh? Canon's catch all error code, there is a ton of little entities that can cause error 99 from using third party lenses, batteries and even grips but, it all comes back to an electric contact fault. By using a good clean new pencil one with the red rubber eraser most of the error 99 problems can be quickly for lack of words erased. The most obvious problem area if you camera is not fitted with a battery grip is the lens contacts between it and the body of the camera.
Remove the lens, put the body cap on the camera when you are doing this part and while holding the lens as vertical as possible with the contacts down lightly rub the cold contacts. You can use a lens tissue and blow bulb/puffer to remove loose rubber. While you are at it clean all your lenses and put the rear lens cap on while not in use.
Okay the body, it's not as easy but doable, remove the body cap keeping the lens mount and open cavity pointing downward. Lightly rub the body contacts well but also gently, clean any rubber away from the contacts using a lens tissue. Don't use the bulb/puffer as it will blow eraser dust into the camera and possibly cause flecks of dirt to adhere to the sensor.
Once clean reinstall your lens and go do some photography.
Other things that cause this annoying error 99 are grip contacts, battery and recently I got into an error problem and my fix was updating to new camera firmware. That problem took me while on an assignment and would have been embarrassing except my back up was a "Rebel". Winding down the shoot the Rebel started with this error 99. Once back to the studio I did the updates and cleaned every lens I had. Cheers Happy New Year have fun make lots of pictures.

The auto setting is just that, the camera selects all functions. What you are most likely attempting to do is change one of the auto settings. If you want some control of the camera functions turn the dial to a more user input friendly setting such as "P" for program. It sounds like to me as if you have the camera set on the green rectangular box. If you do the camera has total control

Your coin battery that powers the memory system of your camera may be failing. This battery keeps your settings and powers your on board computer. Do not confuse this with your picture battery, as that only powers the lens and picture taking ability. The coin battery holds the program. See page 38 of your manual "Replacing the Date/Time battery."

Is the flashing green light looks like a "dot" blinking? If yes, then you might have mistaken this with the auto focus feature of that camera. How long have you been pressing? Have you tried pressing longer? If its not it, then try to turn off the camera and take out the memory card. Once the card is out, try to power on the camera and see if it gives the flashing green again. If it no longer shows, then you might need to reformat the memory card using the camera menus.

Let me know how this goes so I can suggest other solutions. Thank you for using FixYa.

If your camera is a Rebel XS you should have a dial on the top right with a series of letters and icons. To set your camera so you manually control the shutter speed turn this dial too "TV" (Time Value). This setting will allow you to select the shutter speed and the aperture will open or close to achieve the correct exposure. The "M" is (Manual) where you would select both the shutter speed and aperture "AV" is (Aperture Value) where the user selects the aperture they want and the shutter speed increases or decreases to obtain a proper exposure. The "P" (Program) mode allows the camera to automatically select the shutter speed and aperture

The Rebel XS has an exposure compensation of + or - 2 EV in 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments. I suspect that this setting has been altered resulting in over exposures. It will not matter where you set your camera in manual operation it will still yield an overexposure.

Will the lenses for a

Yes the Canon EOS lenses from film bodies will fit and work well on Canon digital bodies.
Depending on the Canon digital body you select the lens may have a 1.6 x factor. Meaning the focal length of the film lens will become a longer focal length. For an example Canon's 50mm f1.8 lens on the APS size digital sensor will translate to an 80mm equivalent. This is great for most people but, getting a good wide angle lens is a bit of a challenge, there has to be a tread off somewhere. There are Canon full frame cameras that this factor doesn't apply, for example a Canon 5D.

Hi, I have a canon eos rebel xs. the mirror is

This is a digital camera and I suspect it's not the mirror that's showing dirt it's the sensor. If you are seeing small bits of dirt on your pictures then it's dirt on the sensor. I would suggest having it cleaned at a camera store or repair facility if you are not comfortable with doing it yourself. Cleaned improperly can damage the sensor and renter the camera pretty well useless. The dirt inside the Tamron lens I would also suggest cleaning and if you are getting an error message you may as well send the camera in for a complete cleaning. There are kits on the marked to clean the sensors but again if you are not confident that you can do this then sent it to people that can and do it on a regular bases.

I have a Canon Rebel

I hate asking a question to answer a question but, did you get a picture after the camera finished flashing busy? Were you using one of the program modes like portrait, close up, landscapes and so on or were you in a creative zone such as manual, AV, TV or P? Here is a good link to a review on your camera http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/eos_rebel_xs-review/ it might help solve your problem. The Rebel XS is a 10.1 meg camera which is a sizable digital file my thought are it could be possible the camera is still writing the file to the media card. If the internal flash was used then the processor is writing to the file and using power to recharge the flash. It could be that the battery is low and it's taking longer to recharge the flash giving the "Busy" warning The Rebel processor is pretty darn quick and it has a decent size buffer so the write speed shouldn't be giving you a problem unless you have put some type of slow media card in it. In that case it wouldn't matter how fast the camera is if the write speed of the card is low. Also the Rebel has several "quality" settings for pictures and the higher the quality the slower it will be to process but, the Rebels processor is darn quick so this shouldn't be the issue

When I press the shutter

The Canon Rebel XS is a digital camera not film. Most of your problems may stem back to not having a media card installed. Here is a great link for the Canon EOS Rebel XS showing important functions http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/eos_rebel_xs-review/ If you have a media card installed and it has been formatted to the camera then the red light you mention will only flicker for an instant on your focus point, you got to be pretty quick to see it. The in focus light you want to see is a small green dot in the lower right corner of the viewfinder. This "green dot" needs to be solidly lit not flickering. When the camera has achieved focus the "beep" should sound, I suspect you haven't reached focus yet. Not focusing could be as simple as having the lens switch set to manual focus or the camera set to manual focus.

My camera turns on but

There may be a few things preventing the camera from taking a picture. I don't know the lens you are using but by chance does it have an auto/manual switch that has been switched to manual? Also make sure the lens is locked in position. The camera won't take a picture unless it has focus in the auto focus mode, this is normal. What are you trying to focus on? The camera auto focus system will search and fail to auto focus on surfaces that have little or nor contrast. For example glass, chrome, a blank wall, water, blue sky. Other conditions that auto focus fails is being to close to your subject, heavy fog, a dim lit subject, available light and night photography. Once the little green confirmation light comes on the camera has focus and will operate as it should.

Canon EOS Rebel XS won't take pictures. Will turn

This is a fairly new Digital camera model. A few quick things that could cause your particular problem is that the camera hasn't had a media card installed. The media card may not have been formatted to the camera. The lens is not totally locked in position. Within the menu there is a function that prevents the camera from taking a picture if there is no media card installed. If there is a media card in the camera it may be full of pictures and unable to store any more images. If the media card is not the problem then I would say that the camera is not focusing and without focus the camera will not take a picture. Look for the auto focus confirmation little green dot in the viewfinder it should be a solid green not blinking. Hope this was a help

My canon xr rebel switches

dear sir,
the first suspect is your battery, ahich is running in low battery....kindly recharge the battery for few hours and then put your camera on........ also the problem can be because of the rough moving of lens in and out because of accumulation of dust and lint inside, which cause this problem.
next, the problem is usually caused by virus and sometimes it might be software failure also, which causes some of the menu not to function, the only solution is to flash ur cam software from the nearest canon service centre
thank you.....take care................
