I'd keep on using it if I were you. As long as the flash is being used exclursively in manual mode then there isn't really a need to be able to see the display.

Yes you can but it won't TTL and you will need to fire it from or with a slave/light cell. This will make your system more like a studio set up. You will need to increase/decrease the light intensity using different modifiers for special effects. It is normal for flashes to make this kind of noise, and the more powerful the flash, the louder it is likely to be. I know no way to make it quieter.

No. The rebel, or any digital canon camera requires the use of the EX or EX II series flashes.

Try short center pin to outside rail of flash, this must fire the flash.
