Canon Speedlite 540EZ TTL Flash Questions & Answers
Canon Speedlite 580 EX II
is your master flash set on a camera? The EX II has something that makes it have a 1 second delay when using sync mode, unless the master flash is set on the camera.
Faint lcd display
I'd keep on using it if I were you. As long as the flash is being used exclursively in manual mode then there isn't really a need to be able to see the display.
Can I use it wirelessly with a canon EOS 40D
Yes you can but it won't TTL and you will need to fire it from or with a slave/light cell. This will make your system more like a studio set up. You will need to increase/decrease the light intensity using different modifiers for special effects. My portable/location set up uses 2 Vivitar 283's, a Canon 533G, Nikon SB 15 and a Canon 420 EX all fired from little flash slaves. here is an e-Bay reference link

Hope this was a help
Wont work
According to the Canon feature chart I have here; the 540EZ Speedlite flash is not compatible with the Digital Rebel XT in ETTL mode. The 480EG is also not compatible. The 550 or any of the others in that product line are would work.
