Fear not. This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

PS. I still got my old A40 too, and will never get rid of it. I have many other cameras, mostly Canons, and for prints none of them matches the vibrant colors and clarity of my A40 in Auto.
