I lost my canon installation cd what can i d now

Don't worry, you don't really need it to use your camera. Just get a card reader (compact flash or "CF" for your camera) and then you can get the photos off your camera onto your computer easily. You may even be able to plug the camera in with the cable and use the operating system's software to download pictures that way.

I never use the software provided with my powershot anyway. You can use a free alternative like Picassa (google it.) The only thing you might lose is the ability to stich panoramas together.

I have lost the installation disc for my Canon

Don't give up on your A40 just yet. I still have mine, and although it's only a 2MP camera, IMO the pictures that it can produce in auto mode are some of the best from Canon's line of cameras.
But unfortunately as you've discovered there is no driver for its use with Window's Vista. What this means is that you can't plug the camera directly into your computer to download pictures. But that may be a blessing in disguise as there is an alternative, much easier way, to download photos from digital cameras.
Most professional photographers utilize inexpensive external card readers to download their photos. There are several important reasons discussed in this blog article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue. If you do purchase one, make sure that it is stated CF card capable, and for use with Window's Vista.

Fear not. This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

PS. I still got my old A40 too, and will never get rid of it. I have many other cameras, mostly Canons, and for prints none of them matches the vibrant colors and clarity of my A40 in Auto.

It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please see the following post, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. Note that card readers are also VERY inexpensive. Just make sure that you get one that's stated capable of reading your A40's CF card:

+driver for canon powershot a 40 on vista

I had same problem. Called Canon and found out A40 is not compatible with Vista so there is no driver. But you can download pics to your Vista by purchasing USB Memory Card Reader/Writer you can find at Walmart for about $12.00. You put your Flash card in device and has USB that plugs in computer for downloading pics.
