D-Link DP 301U (DP-301U) Print Server - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

The DP-300U can be accessed with the password SYSxxxx, where "xxxx" is the last four digits of the unit's MAC address. The MAC address can be found printed on a sticker on the bottom of the unit.

First off, I would like to provide you a link with the print server's manual to download it directly and have it as spare.

The printer you are trying to install is a laser printer (black/white only) and probably a bit old model.
Therefore, if you are trying to print from your computer over ethernet, and you have windows vista or 7 (64 or 32bit accordingly) you might have the inappropriate drivers for either the print server or the printer. You can find all of the HP printer's drivers HERE. Select carefully based on your OS.

As a SIDENOTE: If you just need the drivers installed and there are only larger setup execut. files available, you can use 7zip or winace to open up the *.exe file and navigate to the appropriate folder and extract only that one to your computer and install the driver(s) from there.


The D-Link DP-301U print server drivers are available HERE. Default username and password for the management console of the print server can be found at pdf manual page 25. The url to access the administration console is dlink-******,where the asterisks stand for the last 6 digits of the print server MAC address.


Overall, not to make things over-complicated (150+ PDF user manual pages) you need to do the following:

1. Install the appropriate drivers of your hp printer on the computer that will have also print serv. softare installed.
2. Install the appropriate software/drivers of the dlink print server on the same computer.
3. Plugin the usb cable of your printer to the print server's USB port.
4. Plugin the ethernet cable of your print server port to the ethernet port of your home router/switch.
5. Setup Fixed IP settings for your print server configuration (page 20 on the manual).

Let me know how that went. I believe you will manage to do it that way quite easily.

Way more information is needed in order to provide an answer. I suggest you go to D-Link's site and download the Quick-Install Guide for this product and follow the procedures outlined in it.

Port 80 may be open behind the router to network B, but the ports used for printing may not. See if the router is blocking any ports and disable this feature for printing ports or all ports if possible.
Alternatively, try setting up a virtual server on the bridging router that points to the static ip address of your printer on network A.

it will automatically show you all the connected Print Servers,
Click on IP icon and it will prompt you for the password, Enter the password (default= admin) if you haven't set your own and it will show you the IP

YOU MAY NEED TO UPDATE THE DEVICES INTERNAL FIRMWARE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE USING 64 BIT. ALSO WINDOWS 7 DOES NOT LIKE DEVICES THAT OPERATE WITHOUT PASSWORDS, SO MAKE SURE YOUR WIRELESS SECURITY SETTINGS ARE CORRECT. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO BROWSE YOUR COMPUTER NETWORK AND SEE THE DP301. IF NOT, MAKE SURE YOUR WINDOWS 7 PC IS ON THE SAME WORKGROUP. THANKS

Is the server windows 7 compatible?Not all hardware is compatible with this OS.If not you will have to get one that is.

Print Server doesnt require driver. Connect the printer to the computer directly and check if it is printing. The drivers for the printer will be loaded and you will be able to print. Then connect the printer to Print server and you will be able to print. If it is still not printing, you have to create an LPR port for the printer driver

One of the main difference between this tow printer is the DPR1020 is made to work with all printer including those multi function printers , because this old DP301U was a older version of print server that don't support those new multi function printers features like scanning and fax. So if you have a multi function printer I will advice you to get the DPR1020 so all features of that printer will work behind this print server.

The D-Link DP-301U Print Server does *not* have a password by default. If you have come into the possession of one and it is password protected, then it is likely that the previous owner added a password.
In order to bypass it and reset the Print Server, while the device is powered on, you will have to hold down the RESET button on the back using a paper clip for 10 seconds.

Why?

If you really need the upgrade, download the instructions and the updated firmware from DLINK's web-site, and follow the instructions.

Your print server has to have its own IP address. If you have your computer as 198.168.1.1 then your print server would be 198.168.1.2.
You cant have the same IP address on any 2 items on your network.

i got my dp-301u to work fine with my hp1020 on 2 different workstations with the following steps.

1. install printer locally via usb and test.
2. create a second printer as per the dlink manual creating a port. don't worry about the name as we will delete it.
3. once created go into the properties of the 2nd printer and change the port to something local - anything will do to free up the port.
4. go into the properties of the printer that was created in step 1. and change the port to that of the print server.
5. test print. should work fine.
