My router refuses to aquire

Make the FixYa experience better for everyone by voting.

Hi,

My name is Ben and I'm your guru, i.e., mentor, an influential teacher or popular expert: a management guru. - origin from Sanskrit, 'weighty, grave', for today.

As you evaluate my advice and suggestions, there are a few things you must keep in mind:

• I did not diagnose your problem and am therefore only able to evaluate what you tell me. For example, if you ask me a fuse location, that doesn't mean that I can tell you the reason why the fuse blew.
• A thorough diagnostic approach involves the use of technical equipment, such as voltage meters. scanning equipment and other sophisticated devices.
• Lastly, fixing one problem can very easily reveal a problem with something that you might consider unrelated. If that happens, you might want to view me as being incompetent but I must rely on what you do or do not tell me.

Subject: Methodology for connecting a router

Customer's exact description: my router refuses to aquire a ip from modem, pc can aquire ip directly from modem

Discussion: I'm assuming that you are running a recent version of Microsoft Windows such as XP, Vista or 7. This will be a three (3) phase solution. It is imperative that each step be followed in order.

First Step: Let's make certain that your operating system is ready to accept your router. Click on the following link and Microsoft will analyze your system and correct any deficiencies. Microsoft Fixit Site.

Second Step:

Make certain that your router is up-to-date.

Updates are regularly posted on the manufacturer's site to fix issues you encountered while attempting to use their device. The following will guide you on how to keep your device updated and working properly.

These are the common reasons why you need to do an upgrade:

• Dropping or intermittent connection
• Fix the bugs and known issues with the current firmware or driver version
• Basic Troubleshooting did not work

NOTE: For basic troubleshooting tips in wirelessly connecting to your router, please refer to your user manual.

Firmware updates are required especially if you start experiencing connection problems within your local network. An updated firmware also fixes the bugs of its previous version as well as providing new functionalities for the device. However, this should only be done after doing some basic troubleshooting that did not work.

NOTE: For future reference. Updating the router's firmware is not recommended if there are no connectivity issues.

Adapters

A driver update for your adapter is necessary in order to enhance the wireless performance and functionality of your device. This is recommended especially if the adapter is not working properly after you updated the router or the computer itself. A corrupted driver will cause your adapter to stop working.

QUICK TIP: For future reference. For Ethernet and wireless adapters, you need to download drivers while for devices such as routers, gateways and network access storage, you need to download the firmware.

Third Step: Connecting to the Internet using a Router

Choose a convenient location to begin installing your router, such as an open floor space or table. This does not need to be the permanent location of the router. For wireless routers, it may be necessary to re-position the unit after installing it as the signals may not reach all areas needed.

• Unplug the power to your Internet modem.
• Power down your computer(s).
• Plug the power in to your router.
• Connect your Internet modem to the router. The cable plugs into the router jack named "WAN" or "Internet". Turn on your Modem.
• Connect one computer to the router. Even if the router is a wireless model, connect this first computer to the router via a network cable.
• Turn on the computer.
• From the computer connected to the router, open your web browser. Enter the router's address, http://192.168.2.1, and press Enter on your keyboard.
• Click Login. The router does not ship with a password, so just click Submit.

To configure the router to connect to the Internet, you must enter information provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) into the "Connection Type" section in the left-hand column under the "Internet WAN" heading of the router's configuration page. If using DSL Internet, you may need to enter the PPPoE username and password. Likewise, if you have been issued a static IP address by your provider, the static IP fields (including network mask and gateway) must also must be set in the router.

Since this is a wireless router, change the network name (referred to as SSID). While the router comes to you with a network name set at the factory, you may want to use something more familiar for your network. Read Changing the Router's Wireless Channel and SSID -- or some other similiar language in your user guide --for a description of this process.

Verify that this computer can connect to the Internet properly. Open a new web browser and visit a few Internet sites such as Google.com or Yahoo.com.

Finally, configure additional network security features as desired to guard your systems against Internet attackers.

That's the three step program to solve this particular problem.

If you are still having problems, follow the steps outlined in the Windows operating instructions. Unfortunately, most individuals buy computers with the software installed by the manufacturer and don't receive the full manual.

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click on TOOLS
3. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS
4. Click on CONNECTIONS
5. Click on SETUP
6. Click on I WANT TO SET UP MY INTERNET CONNECTION MANUALLY
7. Click on NEXT
8. Click on I CONNECT THROUGH A LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)
9. Click on NEXT
10. Click on NEXT [this is not a typo]
11. Click on TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET IMMEDIATELY .........; and,
12. Click on FINISH

You should now be connected.

All the best,

Ben

My d link dlg400 router won't issue it's own

The default IP address for this router is 192.168.0.1. Try that. If it is assigning ip addresses to your computer, you can check under status of network connections by right clicking the lan connection, left-clicking status, then click the support tab. The IP address listed next to gateway should be your routers IP address.

Hi, I have at&t DSL using a westell modem and

For any network, you should have one DHCP server. If you try and have more than one DHCP server, it may still work if you have non-overlapping assigned ranges. Also, it sounds like you have more than one network - the network between your westell an your D-Link and between your D0Link and its clients. My belief is that both of those devices can run DHCP servers, firewalls, NAT and so forth, and if the laptop gets multiple responses it can use the wrong one.
One thing that you could do to make things simpler is to put your westell in bridge mode and that will insure you have only one DHCP server, NAT, etc - the one on your DGL-4300.
By "Entire system", do you mean the laptop?
Chances are you can tell windows to "repair" the adapter and it will (given encouragement) disable and reenable the adapter, renew the IP address and so forth. There are command line tools as well, open a cmd and type
ipconfig /renew
to get a new ip address and avoid the reboot.

Will not let me into router. only have an option

are you trying to access the router set up ?
First make sure that your computer will be connected to the router with the ethernet cable.
Now check the IP address and Default gateway on the computer. Default gateway will be the IP address of the router.
When you try to access the router it will always ask you for the password.
Try the default user name = admin and password = admin
or try user name = blank ( do not type anything), password = admin.
if that is not working then the password of the router must be changed.
try some different password that you use most often.
If that doesn't work then you will need to reset the router and reconfigure the router.
once you reset the router , you will loose all the settings on the router.
Reset the router for 30 seconds. unplug the power. plug it back in. wait for 1 minute and try to open the page again.
Click Here to know more about how to reconfigure the router

8. once all is set. save the settings and to check if your laptop can access the wireless network that you did, turn on the wireless switch of your laptop, once its on, it will show the wireless network icon on the lower right of the taskbar, right click it and select on view available network, the network name that u did should list, just select it and connect and it will ask for the password, just type the password and connect, you should be connected to the wireless network and have internet access..
