Epson PhotoPC 850Z Digital Camera Questions & Answers
Picture focus
Low light = long exposure times
There for hand shake - use a tripod or subject movement.
A Question
What you are seeing is normal behavior for a rangefinder camera. The problem is called parallax error and it occurs with any camera in which the viewfinder is physically offset from the image sensor. As you may have noticed, the problem becomes worse as the camera is brought closer to the subject.
You can either learn how to compensate for this, by rotating the camera upward slightly, or by using the LCD display to frame the image when you are closer than approximately 10 feet from the subject. The markings in the viewfinder may help you to judge how much compensation is necessary.
Epson 850Z diopter adjustment
I did the same thing with the diopter, but no damage seems to have come of it. It does feel very stiff and 'clicky' anyway, but it does work. You will only be able to notice any adjustment to the diopter when the camera is on.
Why not to use the QuickShot mode?
-you can't use Quick SHot when battery is low
-you can't use Hypict mode with Quickshot
-you can't make audio recordings with Quickshot
Epson 850Z and ibm microdrive
While my epson batteries were charging, I used a set of alkalines, and something similar to that happened to me (had to re-set time a bunch). When I pulled the batteries out, they were warm enough that the little built in test strip (a thermal lcd) was 'lit up'. It could be a battery load problem.
USB on Win95
It does appear from Epson's own spec sheet on their website that Windows 98 is a minimum requirement for their USB interface.
Does Hypict really help the resolution?
Hypict degrades image qulity a bit because it is interpolation. You can basically do the same thing in photoshop with similar results, I haven't tested this yet. What it does do is make a beter looking 11x14 print than using the 1200x1600 setting, with no after shot manipulation by the user, so if you knew you wanted the image bigger for some reason, and didn't want to manipulate it later you would do this.
Tiffen 2X teleconvertor telephoto lens
I was testing the new Kenko 2x teleconverter I just got. Seems to work, but only at full zoom. But I left the epson supplied adapter ring on when I turned the camera off, and it interferred with the lens cover, and jammed it. It's a 4 leaf shutter assembly, and mine is screwed up so it won't open or close. Needless to say I'm kind of unhappy. I've heard Epson service is good, guess I'm about to find out.
If you use the adapter, take it off when you turn the camera on or off!
