Don't know what manual you're referring to, but it isn't the HP 630, HP 631, HP 635, and HP 636 Service Manual; from HP Support,
http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02834036/c02834036.pdfUpper part of the laptop is the Top Cover. Most of the time referred to as the Palm Rest Cover.1) Remove the Keyboard2) Remove the Optical Drive (DVD drive) (IF an option on your laptop)3) Remove the Power Button Board and cable.4) Remove the TouchPad Button Board and cable.5) Remove the Top CoverA) Close the computerB) Turn the computer upside down, FRONT towards you.Now pull this example of the Base Enclosure up in another window,

(Put mouse cursor in middle, slowly move mouse around)1) Looking at the FRONT edge, see the SIX screws that need to be removed?2) See the ONE screw on the Left side, and Right side; that needs to be removed?3) ONE screw to remove from EACH corner on the REAR side.4) Battery Compartment / Rear side; There are FOUR screws to remove that are along the Rear side of the Battery Compartment, and DOWN in the Battery Compartment.4) Battery Compartment / Front side; There are THREE screws to remove that are along the Front side of the Battery Compartment, and DOWN in the Battery Compartment.5) DOWN in the Harddrive Bay Compartment there are FOUR screws to remove.TWO on the Right side, TWO on the Left side.IF I count correctly there are 21 screws to remove from the Bottom.(I ran out of toes and fingers)6) Turn the computer back over to it's normal position.Open the laptop.Grab the Jaws of Life and....................Just wanted to see if you were following along.............The rectangular area under where the Keyboard was, and has multi ventilation holes in it, is the Static Shield. To the Upper Left corner is the Power Button Board cable, that needs to be disconnected. To the Middle/Front is the TouchPad Button Board cable that needs to be disconnected.Looking to the upper right there is a hole, and a screw that needs to be removed.More detail;Looking at the ventilation holes going across as rows.Come down to the 3rd and 4th row of ventilation holes.Come OVER from the Right side SIX ventilation holes. That hole, that screw; needs to be removed.IF it still uses this style of fastening; The Top Cover has TABS going around the exterior perimeter, of the inside edges. These Tabs snap into matching LATCHES in the Base Enclosure.(Bottom Cover) I use a thick stiff guitar pick to start popping the covers loose from each other. (Top Cover from Base Enclosure)I would ease the pick in the parting line of Top Cover, to Base Enclosure, towards the Rear/Right side. You just want to ease the pick in, so you can start to get your fingertips in.Can't get the pick in? Move over. You are at a Tab/Latch.Once you get the Top Cover to start to separate, use your fingertips, and move along towards the Front.Go around the Front popping the Tabs/Latches loose.By the time you get halfway around the Left side, the Top Cover may pop off.I state MAY, because I have had some I had to fight all the way.(Pop EVERY Tab/Latch loose)I hope you are wearing an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.IF not, open the backdoor, and throw your laptop out.(Unless you just want to use it as a doorstop)Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer. An ESD wrist strap, and connected to a good ground source, will keep your laptop safe from Static. (From you)The CPU (Processor) is the most susceptible hardware component to Static shock. You know the above? Good. I also posted for people who read this solution in the future.Out of curiosity what CPU are you going to install?[Plus; DO NOT post your email address on FixYa!]For additional questions please post in a Comment.Regards, joecoolvette[Memory Module/Wireless Module Compartment Panel is removed, then there is a screw to remove down in the compartment, that is for the DVD drive.Remove screw to slide DVD drive out of laptop. Can't get a hold of DVD drive? Tap the tray release button, ease the tray all the way out. Gently pull on tray until DVD drive comes out enough, that you can grab it ]
