Most hard drives would be fine for your mac. It's just the formatting needs to be suited for your mac. For laptops you will need to get a 2.5" hard disk but just mimic the HDD size of the original.

Just google your drive's make and model and search the results for a diagram of the jumper settings. If you have a SATA drive, there ARE no jumpers. If the drive is a PATA, then if it's connected with another drive or cdrom, then make the cdrom 'slave' and the disk drive 'master'.Check your bios setting sometimes bios changes the boot order esp. if bios doesn't find a boot disk- make sure you have your desired boot device showing in the boot setup.

You need to format this hard drive using your PC.If the hard drive was formatted using the MAC then the PC won't see anything on the hard drive because the MAC uses a different file system that is not compatible with the PC.BUT if you want to exchange files between the MAC and the PC then format the hard drive using the PC in FAT32 file system.
