I presume this is a scanner that uses a USB connection to your computer. You will find that it does just about nothing until you have it connected both to power and to a computer's USB port. You must also install the appropriate drivers and software. Only then will your computer activate the scanner when you actually try to scan something. The only thing that will activate with only the power cord connected is the scanning lamp inside it so lift the lid and connect the power cord. If the lamp comes on but nothing else, it's just doing what it's supposed to do.

You will probably have to try and use the existing XP driver. When installing the driver software in windows 8, make sure you install it in "compatibility mode" and tick "Windows XP R2".

Should be a standard USB device cable. Any half decent home electronics store sells them. The same cable is used to connect most USB printers.

You need to get a new scanner. Microsoft is not going to support Windows XP anymore period. It is so outdated...please.

Set the machine for XP or Win 98

Could be the scanner is hesitating as the carriage moves - bad gears perhaps. Hhave you thoroughly cleaned the glass and wiped it dry? Is the scanner level andand fully unlocked? I would try these quick fixes first. If they don't work, scanners are cheap nowadays.

Your device is not fit to run under Windows 7 .
Try installing a virtual version of XP on your system : http://download.cnet.com/VMware-Player/3000-2094_4-10470784.html
or purchase a W7 compatible replacement device ( starting from 100 $ ) .

Try running the software in compatibility mode on Win7. To do this:

1. Right click the software and go to Properties
2. Look for the Compatibility Tab and select it
3. Check the box marked Run this program in compatibility mode for XP Service Pack 3
4. Check the box that says Run As Administrator
5. Click OK and see if that works

Since there's not a compatible driver for Win7, you might not be able to do much about it until they release a driver for it.

Sorry, the manufacturer has not released a driver for either Vista or Windows 7. You can try other Umax Astra drivers and see if one of them will work.
