Software Firewalls and Linksys Routers

You can never have too much security, however there are some firewalls that will not work with hardware firewalls, that includes the all Linksys Routers . Keeping this in mind, some software firewall will continue working after the router is installed. If it does, it shouldn't need to remove it, because it's an extra layer of security. However if there are difficulties using the Internet with the Software firewall after installing the router, try disableing it to see if internet is accessable. If the internet works after disabling the software firewall, then remove the firewall.

Unable to access Internet, WAN IP Address present

First you will need to open up your internet browser (Internet Explorer/Netscape) and go to http://192.168.1.1. You will be prompted for a username and password. By default there is no username and the password is admin. Once you arrive at the routers setup page click on the Advanced tab. Once the page finishes loading, you'll find you will be on the "Filters" tab. Look down and make sure that there are no numbers other than 0 in the boxes on that page. If there are, then you will need to replace them with 0's and click Apply, then Continue. Once you've done that, you're going to want to look for Dynamic Routing at the top, and then click on it. Once that page finishes loading, make sure that the "Working Mode" is set to Gateway, not ?Router?, and that tx and rx are set to Disable not RIP-1 or RIP-2. If a static IP address has been set on the computer, verify the gateways matches the Router's LAN IP Address. If there aren't any installed gateways, add the Router's LAN IP Address. When setting static IP Addresses, you must also input the DNS servers. For more information on assigning static IP addresses, please see the related article on assigning static IP addresses. If you?re still having difficulties, please contact Linksys Product Support.

Static IP on machine, no outside access

Double check that the Default Gateway in TCP/IP properties is the routers LAN IP address (By default this is 192.168.1.1) Without a gateway installed, there will be no Internet access. After verifying this go to Start>Run and when the "Run" window appears type command into the "Open" Field, then click OK Once the Command prompt appears type in: ping 207.69.188.185. If you don't get a reply, the gateway is not installed. If there is a gateway already installed, check for any third party firewalls that may be installed on your computer. These can sometimes block Internet access. For more information please see the related article on assigning a static IP address behind the router. If still having problems, contact Linksys Technical Support.

How to Fix Linksys Router Error 2118?

This seems to be a symptom of a configuration error, which can be fixed by resetting the router to factory default. Do this by finding the (often partially hidden) reset button on the device, and pressing and holding down the button, with the power on, till lights start flashing on the router. Let go of the button and allow the router to reset (can take a minute or two). You will now have reset the router to factory default. To connect to your ISP, you'll need to enter your account details (and any other specific information) provided to you by your ISP. You will also have to set a name and password for the wifi section of your router (if it has wifi) if you don't want it to be freely accessible by everyone within wifi range.
