What do I do after the router is reset to the

You have the choice of using the installation program on the CD that came with the router or connecting to the router and then using your browser to go to:

http://192.168.1.1/

and then log in with password "admin" (no username).

Once in to the web page for the router, you'll want to set up the basic wireless and security settings.
On the basic setting page, change the SSID to something unique and change the administrator password to something other than "admin".
On the security page, enable WPA2 security and provide a passphrase to use. Make sure that you write down the passphrase and the administrator passwords for future reference.
This should get you set-up enough to know that your network is secure.
Note that after you change the SSID and the admin password, you will have to first find the new SSID and connect to it again and also supply the new administrator password.
Good Luck
Thanks for using FixYa and Happy New Year.

How do reset the password

There is a "Reset" pinhole on the back of the router. Use a paperclip or similar item to (while the router is on) depress the switch for at least 10 seconds, then release it.

The router will be reset to its factory default condition.

Hope that's helpful.

WRT54GS works fine on LAN cables but the wireless

I don't know how old your unit is. Generally, issues that will cause intermittent connection are (1) RFI (radio frequency interference); (2) poor antenna connection; and (3) circuit degradation caused by overheating.

RFI can be caused by certain older cordless telephones (which operate in the 2.4 ghz band), or other similar wireless devices in close proximity to the router. Putting distance between them is the only viable solution (other than shutting down the offending device).

The antennas can be removed, the contacts sprayed with an electronic contact cleaner (QD Brand is available at most major hardware outlets) and reassembled which in some cases may help.

The last, and unfortunately most likely, situation is that the machine is overheating. Unfortunately (at least in my experience over the past few years) this particular router has shown a tendency to run hot and fail, although they usually last beyond warranty period. Dust doesn't have much to do with it. No, the transmitter circuitry cannot be replaced...and even if it could, it would cost you more than a new router.

It is NOT a driver problem, so don't go trying to update/reinstall drivers.

And, lastly, how far the receiving device (ie., computer) is from the router...and what is in between...can have a huge effect on the signal strength on the receiving end. Has anything changed in the environment in that respect?

Hope that is helpful.

I need to reinstall my router but i have lost the

You do not have to use the cd. Go to the control panel and un-install the program that the cd installed. then:
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPOe.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Happy Holidays!

I was given a router but i dont have install disk

no install disk is needed
Connect the Router (Up link to modem, Port 1 to computer) Boot computer, you should get an IP address in the range of 192.168.1.xxx Open a browser (IE/Firefox etc) on the address line type 192.168.1.1 press enter You will be prompted for a username and password. Leave the username blank, password= admin Once logged into the router, you can set the wireless settings then save and then you can connect via wireless. For Wireless security codes, you can use the default suggested by the router, or as I recommend, use an old 10 digit phone number as WPA key 8009993355 for example as it is generally hard to guess but easy to remember.

My computor will not recognize linksys

The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your computer/laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

That means that your router is functioning properly on your network, communicating with other devices, but your ISP (Internet service provider) connection is malfunctioning, out of service, or otherwise experiencing a problem. Your router can't connect to the Internet because of a problem somewhere between the router and your ISP, or your ISP and the Internet.

My cable network is not reading my router what

First off you should think if you changed anything recently, like driver updates, updated your computer or Operating System? That could give BIG clues to whats the problem.
What type of OS are you using?(ie,xp,vista,7) is it 32bit(86x) or 64bit(64x)?
When I updated my pc to a new 64bit win 7 model, my old wireless g would not work due to compatibility issues(no driver update).
Always try first:
1. unplug all power to router and modem for 30 sec(differs with model)and pc if connected through gateway.
2. Connect router first(wait for full boot-up) then connect modem(wait for full boot-up)then re-boot router while modem is still green(this allows the router and modem to communicate and prepares to open ports. Sometimes the order needs to be reversed to create a comm link.
3. Next thing would be to make sure its the router and not your internet connection(modem) itself. Plug directly into the modem (bypass the router) and make sure you get internet.
4. Last but not least, check to see if you can access your router(everything connected during this test), open up a browser and type your provider I.P.for your router into the browser bar at the top of the page,( ie. 192.168.1.1) different providers are a little different, if it allows you to access your router then it is communicating, and may be being blocked by firewall preferences or closed ports.

Router is not networking wirelessly

More info is needed to diagnose this.

What kind of router is it?
What version of what firmware? Is the firmware standard or have you installed something like dd-wrt or something else?
Did it ever work?
What were you doing when it failed?
Have you ever attempted to update the firmware?

Is it password protected?
Is encryption enabled?
Is the problem happening on another wireless machine?
How far from the router is the wireless unit?

There could be any number of causes.

The first thing to check are all the physical stuff.
Is it plugged in?
You may laugh at the last question but lots of problems are solved very simply.

What have you tried?... with what results?
