If its a decent drive and encrypted I think you are out of luck - If its a cheaper model and not encrypted, just password protected it possible by several methods - try search for a program called ZU.EXE.

Online chat

This occurs when the connection between your hard drive and the operating system has failed before all pending changes have been actually written to the drive - This situation arises when you have 'Write Caching' enabled for the drive - Write caching allows you to carry on doing other things after you have initiated changes to files on the drive (e.g. deleting or copying a large number of files) If you don't have write caching enable then you will have to wait until the operation has completed before doing anything else --- You can change the options for Write Caching by right clicking the drive in Windows explorer and choosing: Properties > Hardware > Selecting the drive again > Choosing Properties again > Selecting the 'Policies' tab and turning off Write caching ----- I can also be a sign of a failing USB Cable or socket, Failing hard drive or Failure of the interface you use to connect the drive to your computer

WD hard drive ditects but doesnt respond

this can be a couple of things either the HDD is faulty OR the HDD has read/write protection on it. So for read/write protection go to my computer and right click on the disk that doesn't work and go properties, then click on the security tab, in a box below there will be some usernames including yours, click your one and click the edit box below. now elevate your permissions to full access read/write. now if the HDD is faulty. this will require more work but will give you a better idea. so first off you will need to acquire a Knoppix ISO image from the internet once you have this you will also need universal USB installer. now you have these both open up the USB installer insert a 1gb USB and select the Knoppix image and let it build. now that's done take your new USB and plug into your pc whilst it is turned off. next turn the pc on but rapidly press one of these F2-F10-F12-del until you are taken into the BIOS menu. now look through the menus until you find one with boot order or priority, what you want to do is set it to boot to the USB first once your happy with that save and exit and boot normally. it should boot into Knoppix here you can try and access your files. so navigate to my computer (or equivalent) until you find your hdd

Question about retreiving data from external hard drive.

There are no problems hooking a external hard drive to any computer. If you mean take the hard drive out of the external case and putting it inside of your computer with a SATA cable, you can do that to. If your worried that they are both Western Digital, there are no conflicts with that either. Good Luck
