AM37 & athlon 1.8 gh freezes while setting up XP

More than likely one of the drivers is bad. Hit F8 several times at startup until the boot screen comes up, select boot into "safe mode with networking" .Use device manager and see if there are any problems. You can delete the drivers, and download & install new drivers if you find problems.

Remove bios battery and erase new bios (usually a pair of pins to short). If USBs now work - don't upgrade bios! If bios settings have no setting for diabling USB, motherboard failrure seems likely. Try a PCI USB card to provide sockets.

Power to the mobo

Without having the specs on the motherboard or knowing how old it is, it's difficult to say if it is beyond repair. Although my experience with computers shutting down that quickly while attempting to boot have been a problem related to processor overheating. Processors get very hot within seconds of powering on. If the processor cooling fan or the thermal paste is not working as intended the system will shut down quickly. You may want to check those two possibilities before purchasing a new motherboard.

Motherboard Installation

There are a number of issues that may be causing your problem.

1. Be certain that the power connection is properly installed; there are usually two connections not one that go from the power supply to the motherboard.

2. Be certain that there is no metal on metal contact between the motherboard and the case. Most modern cases include nylon snap-fit spacers that hold the motherboard to the case but also use brass spacers with screws. There should be red paper gaskets included in the parts bag - place these between the motherboard and the screw and be certain that the base ring (a silver metal ring that is not connected to circuits on the underside of the board) is cleanly centered.

3. Finally there are often switch settings and/or tab jumpers that must be set to declare the CPU type, voltage and speed. Be certain that these are set correctly or the board will not power up.

Conclusion

It is difficult to provide any further tips due to the limited information provided and more information may help.
