How to test Connections with Ping

Ping is one of the first tools to use to check computer, router and Internet connectivity. It's run at a command prompt, but getting the basic information is quite easy. You can do the whole thing in 30 seconds. 1. To run ping, type Start > Run. 2. Type cmd in the Run window, and click OK. A black and white command line window pops up. 3. Type ping followed by an IP address or a DNS address. 4. Press Enter to execute the command. Three useful examples: 1. ping 127.0.0.1 (This is a "loopback ping" ? your computer trying to talk to itself. This tests whether your computer is able to handle Ethernet traffic. If this has a negative result, the computer has an operating system problem.) 2. ping 192.168.1.1 (If the result is "Request timed out", type ping 192.168.0.1. If that also times out, then the computer is not making a connection to your router.) 3. ping www.netgear.com. (Tests whether your computer can contact Internet computers.) When there is no problem, the ping results look as shown in the following screenshot. Three items of interest in the results are highlighted with arrows. The first arrow shows the computer being contacted is replying. (The DNS address "www.netgear.com" is converted by ping into the equivalent IP address, 10.1.1.86.) This shows both that your network is connnected to the Internet, and that that computer on the Internet is running normally. www.netgear.com is always running, so this is a good test address to use. The second arrow shows that Ethernet packets have "0% loss". This is the best possible result. It means that the network connection is lightly loaded, and that it has not been necessary to transmit any of the same information twice. The third arrow shows the average time it took to answer. "Average = 0ms" is the best possible result. Probably you'll only get responses this quickly from computers on your own network. Interpreting Ping when There's a Problem As far as NETGEAR equipment, the problem you're most likely to run into is "Request Timed Out". This means there is no connection. Read these posts: http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=252225&thid=102077 and http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=252225&thid=102074 Another error is "Unknown host", which just means that the DNS or IP address you typed doesn't exist. Probably, you made a typo. Other problems are generally outside the scope of NETGEAR support. Often they are problems with your ISP ? contact them with concerns. A controversial situation is when packet loss is not 0%. Sometimes this indicates a severe problem, but in other situations it doesn't indicate any problem whatever. However anything higher than 5% is definitely a problem. If the average round trip time is > 500 ms, there' s possible latency problem. Again, contact your ISP. Limitations of the Ping Tool * Ping is not a good tool for diagnosing intermittent problems. * Good results are reliable, but ?bad results? could be caused by any number of things, and are not necessarily reliable! * Ping uses ICMP, which has low priority, showing speeds that are slower than regular network traffic. Some computers reject ICMP, and therefore pinging, entirely. * When an IP appears between the source and destination in a traceroute command it does *not* mean that that IP must be pingable.

I have a netgear router CG814WG v3. trying to use

Hi, your router does not support wireless mode 802.11a, now I haven't got the Xbox 360 Wireless adapter, but it supports all 3 standards (802.11a, b, and g) So should work fine with your current setting on 802.11g, the 802.11a is recommended because it avoids interference especially from microwaves, as this operates on the same frequency on the 802.11g standard. So best thing to do it, not use a microwave!. But if interference is a problem, then you would have to replace your router that supports all 3 standards.

How do I set up my home router for remote viewing

Hi,

The Steps are :-

1. You will need to set up a static IP address for your Camera's network adapter. Normally, your router will assign the camera a different Ip address each time your Camera is Turned On and attaches itself to your network. You will need to look in the network set up portion of the camera's manual how to do this.

2. Port Forward whatever port the camera will be listening on that when you type in the address in IE, it will be bring up the camera.

3. Anytime one computer connects to another, it creates a Socket. A socket consists of 2 ip address and their associated port numbers. In order to get to your camera, you will need to have a Global ip address assigned to your Home Internet Connection and the port number that you forwarded to the camera.

4. Th Global ip address can usually be obtained by 2 ways. You could either login to your router's configuration screen and check the status page of the Ip address ( Ignore the IP's that start with 192.168.xx.xx for this purpose ) or you can go to http://whatismyip.com

Once you have the Global Ip address, then address you will type into the browser will be of the form IP:PORT.so, if the IP address were 75.21.58.28 and the port number were 2257, ( there are all arbitrary numbers ) then the address you would type would be 75.21.58.28:2257.

How to improve on Wireless Range

Wireless and Antenna Terms Wireless routers, access points, and adapters send and receive radio wave signals through antennas. The antenna is hidden inside adapters, but on routers and access points there's a visible antenna. Radio waves can be focussed like a lightbulb. And like a light, some materials reduce or stop radio waves. While light focused from several lights is brighter and makes it easier to see, several antennas in the same area cause interference ? the radio signals will be muddy and confused. Your goals in optimizing power are: * Avoid obstacles. * Avoid interference. * Increase signal strength. Power affects how far an antenna radiates. * Use the equipment in places it's most powerful and most sensitive. Antennas don't radiate equally in every direction. Just as the base of a lightbulb blocks light, and just as a light can be focussed by a reflector, so an antenna signal may be blocked and focused. Since people cannot see radio waves, you'll rely on testing and trial-and-error to get an idea of where antennas "shine" most brightly. An adapter's antenna is important, but the most powerful and sensitive antennas are on routers, access points, and detachable external antennas. The focus of an antenna is either omni-directional antenna or directional. "Omnis" are used in most home products, they radiate horizontally all around, but are weaker upward or downward. When visible, these antennas are usually a rod a few inches long. A directional antenna radiates strongly in a limited direction. It is a flat panel or a dish. These are used for point-to-point transmissions (where two antennas are focused directly at each another). These need a line of sight between them, and preferably a large open space around the main beam. When you are near antennas you'll still get a signal, even if you are out of the direction of its strongest signals. But when further away, you have to be in the direction the beam is the most powerful and unobstructed to receive it. One final concept before you go to the above links is interference. Interference is a signal ? one you don't want ? at the same frequency as the one you're using. Interference comes from devices such as microwave ovens, cell phones, 2.4 GHz cordless phones, and copy machines. Interference is also caused when your own wireless signals are bounced off reflecting objects. Objects may partly or completely absorb signals, reflect them, bend them, or let them pass right through. Metal and water (including the water in people!) absorb or reflect signals. Air, wood, and glass tend to let signals pass with weakening. And when outdoors, plants and the weather may cause interference.

No Internet Through the Router

If changing from a dial-up connection, see warning at bottom. Troubleshooting Steps 1. Connect your computer directly to the modem, without the router. If you cannot access the Internet, contact your ISP. 2. Reconnect the router, modem, and computer as they were before Step 1. Can you log on to the router? If not then: 1. Check that all cables attached to the router and computer are secure. 2. Check the Internet LED is lit. If it is not, troubleshoot light status, as explained in the router manual. 3. Check the LEDs for the ports with cables are lit. If not, move the cable to a different port. If there are still no lights, then troubleshoot light status, as explained in the router manual. 4. Check if the LED on the Ethernet adapter is lit. If it is not, then troubleshoot the adapter, do not continue this document. If the adapter is not NETGEAR's, contact the manufacturer. 5. Power off the router. 6. Power the router on again. 7. If you still cannot log on to the router, then do a hard reset on the router, as described here: http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?thid=102071&prdid=252225. 8. If you still cannot log on to the router, Contact NETGEAR: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n100005.asp . 3. Run the router's SmartWizard. This lets the router discover whether you have a static or dynamic IP address, and whether you are using PPPoE to connect to your ISP. (For routers without this utility, go to Step 7.) 4. If a dynamic IP address is discovered, go to Step 8. 5. If PPPoE is discovered, configure your router with the username and password from your ISP. Click Apply to enter the data. Go to Step 8. 6. If a static IP address is discovered, configure your router with this information given by your ISP: the IP address for your router, the address of the ISP's DNS, and the address of the gateway. Click Apply to enter the data. Go to Step 8. 7. If the Smart Wizard does not find an IP address: 1. Power off the router. 2. Power off the modem. 3. Power on the modem. 4. Power on the router. 5. Go back to Step 3. 8. Click Test to access NETGEAR's online test page. If the page displays, then you have Internet access! 9. If the page does not display in a minute, check here: http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=252225&thid=102076 . 10. Find out if the modem's IP address can be seen by looking at the Router's Status Page, as described in the manual. If not, then reboot the modem, router, and computer, in that order ? waiting for each to completely reboot before rebooting the next. 11. If the modem's IP is seen, then there is a problem with your browser's settings. Your security may be set too high for the Internet service you are trying to use, or your browser may be configured for a dial-up connection. In Internet Explorer you check this using Tools > Internet Options > Security > Default Level. If the slider is set to "High", change it to "Medium". Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections. If the radio buttons in the center are not greyed out, then settings for a dial-up connection are being used. Warning: If you are a dial-up user converting to a cable or DSL connection, some software will not work when both types of configuration are present. Configuring your new connection may stop your dial-up connection from working. You may have to configure to connect one way or the other.
