Use balanced lines for the audio interconnects. Use XLR low noise mic cables or TRS type cables. IMPORTANT: Power the speakers and the mixer from the SAME receptacle, even if it means running extension cords. Ground bounce in building wiring can destroy the circuits in the equipment.

it should be if you hook something up to an input channel like w the band i was in i had to hook my turntables up to a microphone jack on an open channel . so yeah if u plug lets say a cd player plug the output of that into the input of the mackie and make sure you have your speakers in the output of mackie all set up and it should work no problem. We have the same mackie

This is probably pilot error. There are a bunch of things to do to setup this correctely. I would recommend looking at the videos about mixer setup on YouTube. There is a procedure you go through that is COMMON to most brands of the mixer. The fact that the volume meters aren't working at all implies a problem that the mixing buss is not receiving audio. Turn trim gains up, turn the faders both the channel and the main up, and UNMUTE the channels of interest and you should be getting audio through the unit. ALso does your headphone jack work?
