Freeze and pixelate problems
HELLO RAY!
It does not matter how much a DVD player cost you in the past (say $100+) when the laser unit is gone - it's gone! Your tech guy was correct it can cost as much (or more) to have a laser unit replaced so I'm afraid it looks like a trip to the dump is on the cards.
I had a Sanyo SX-25 DVD player (hell of a unit-used a Sony laser) but mine went the same way as yours. I don't agree that DVD players will break down after a year or so - all it means is that manufacturing them has got cheaper (quite a number are now made in the far east). I will be honest with you, I don't know much regarding Blu-Ray players though I DO know some have had problems.
Here in the UK, I can buy a DVD player for about £20 in a supermarket (about $32 in your money) and probably hack it for multi-region playback as well.
As for DVD lens cleaning discs, well personally I don't like to use them I prefer to clean the lens properly using a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol which is much a more effective method even if you do have to take the cover off.
I hope this has answered some of your questions but if I were you, I'd pop along to your local Wal-Mart store and see what DVD machines they have in there! (:-)
Kenwood TS-690S will not power on
If your Kenwood TS-690S is not powering on, here are some things you can check:
- Power source: Make sure the power source is working properly. Check the power outlet, power cord, and any fuses or breakers that might be involved.
- Power switch: Check the power switch on the back of the unit. Make sure it is in the "on" position.
- Battery: If your unit has an internal battery, check to make sure it is charged and working properly.
- Connections: Check all the connections between the radio and any other devices it is connected to. Make sure they are securely connected and that there is no corrosion or damage.
- Internal components: If none of the above solutions work, there may be an issue with the internal components of the radio. In this case, it is best to take it to a professional for repair or contact Kenwood customer service for further assistance.

I have a KAC-729S KEnwood 600 watt amp. that wont power up.
You most likely have a shorted or grounded wire. First remove all the speaker wires with the power off then power it on to see what happens. If it powers on just fine then it's one of the speaker wires that's causing the problem. Power it back off and add one speaker wire then power it back on and repeat the process until you find the culprit. If it doesn't power on initially with the speaker wires disconnected then the problem lies in the main power, the remote power wire or quite possibly a poor ground which is very very common.
