20 Most Recent Gateway Desktop / Intel Core i3 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive (DX484011E) Questions & Answers

A couple of things spring to mind, but difficult not having the machine.

Upgrade to Windows 10 is automatic and your machine is trying to update and finding a problem. I would not load Windows 10 until Service Pack 1 comes out.

Also sounds if the processor is overheating. When you boot up, you can get into the BIOS, often by tapping Delete, or F10. There is usually a prompt onscreen during boot up. One of the screens in the BIOS tells you the processor temperature. If it rises over 60' you have a problem with cooling. The computer has a fail safe feature to save the processor by shutting down.

The problem may still be your audio. If you go into the bios and switch the audio off and the problem disappears then you will need a separate audio card in a PCI slot.

Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-14900, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 32GB
Slots: 4
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-14900 with a maximum of 16GB kit (8GBx2) per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS.

Hello, I am the technician that you be assisting you today. My name is Norman-Wynne Damstra.

Welcome to Fixya Jeffery.

Yes you are quite correct, your upgraded computer system is giving off a large amount of heat, that graphics upgrade is quite substantial.

See these off the shelf PC's from manufactures really don't take the computer gamer's needs into account with regards to cooling. Gaming gear gives off a whole bunch of heat and this heat as you have come to find needs to be expelled quite quickly for a stable and cool gaming computer system.

Here are two possible solutions for this problem:
Option 1.) Installing cooling into the side panel is the easiest, most effective way of cooling your computer's components. I would reccomend installing at least two 120mm fans. What you do is set the one so that the fans hub would sits directly above the CPU. This fan would therefore provide freash cool air from outside the chassis to your CPU cooler.
The second fan would be installed so that the hub sits slightly below the Circuit Board (PCB) of the Graphics card. This fan would therefore provide freash cool air from outside the chassis to your Graphics card. Be sure to check that the fan, once installed over the Graphics card clears the actual graphics card once the side panel is slid closed.
You will need to measure and drill 4 holes for each fan, and then cut out the metal in the middle for air to pass through the chassis side panel. One can buy 120mm fan grills to protect anything large from touching the fan blades, it also makes the mod look smart and finished off. They are bought in crome or black finish. Check your computer store.

Now that the intake is sorted your will need to work on a suitable spot to install exhaust fans. Some-times there is enough space around the rear 80mm fan to drill and fit a 120mm fan. Again you will need to drill 4 holes and cut away the middle of the chassis for the air to pass through the chassis. You will need to check if this option is available to you. Another exhaust option is the top of the chassis for natural convection currents (hot air rising), usually install either 1 or 2 120mm fans depending on the position of the Power Supply, as some are fitted on the top and others on the bottom.
Visit your local computer store for fan mounting; kits, ideas, available fan speeds and airflow rates, purchase fans.

Option 2.) Involves the purchase of a suitable gaming computer chassis. These would be better suited to your gaming setup/needs and have lot's of fan install points. You would want to get one, if you so choose that offers 120mm or 140mm fan mounting options. Usually offering in excess of 3 mounting points. Giving your computer components freash air, thereby decreasing tempreature, increasing performance, reliability and longevity.
There are lot of diffent sizes and styles available.

I would reccomend either Cooler Master 690 series or Corsair.

Take care!

CMOS Checksum Error, and having to set the Date/Time repeatedly, generally points to a bad CMOS battery.
If it were I, I would replace the battery with a new one. However this is what I would do.

Your computer is still under warranty. Opening the computer case may void the warranty.
Therefore you may not come to the same decision that I would.

On the motherboard is a round flat battery about the size of a U.S. Nickle.
It's a type of watch battery. Generally a CR2032.

Example;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CR2032_battery

A CMOS battery will generally last from 4 to 7 years. Perhaps the CMOS battery installed in your Gateway is bad. Just a lemon that came from the battery factory.

The battery holder on the motherboard is rounded in shape to fit the battery, and has a metal clip inside. There are different styles of fastening used in the clip design, but generally a small tab of the clip is eased to the outside edge of the battery holder, thereby releasing the battery.

This article will 'shed more light' on the various styles of CMOS battery holders,

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/81

Proper procedure in order to replace the CMOS battery;

1) Unplug the computer from power.
[NOTE* Always unplug the power cord from the surge protector, and not from the computer's Power Supply. (Back of the computer) Unplugging from the Power Supply MAY cause a voltage spike. ]

2) Observe Anti-Static Precautions

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.
ALWAYS relieve your body of Static BEFORE working on a computer.

Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

3) Opening the computer case:
This is Gateway Support, and the Support Documents page for the Gateway DX4840 series of Desktop Computers,

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/s/desktop/2010/gateway/dx/dx4840/DX4840nv.shtml

I would like you to click on - Product Views.
Now click on Rear View.

Observing the rear of the computer look at the right side. Along the edge down towards the bottom is a screw. This screw is removed, then the Side Panel is pulled towards the rear of the computer.
(There is a raised portion, or hump, in the Side Panel for placing your fingers)

If your Gateway DX4840-11e desktop computer has an Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, the CMOS battery is located down towards the bottom of the motherboard, and slightly to the right.

For additional questions, or clarification to what I have stated, please post in a Comment.
Regards,
joecoolvette

do you have the sound set to surrond sound? What it sounds like is that it is trying to play through surrond speakers but you dont have them, which is why you can hear the music and not the actors voices. click with the right mouse button on the speaker in the bottom right of your screen, then click on sounds , now click on the playback tab in the sound window, click on the sound device shown and then click configure, choose stereo and choose two speakers. Continue to the end then try to play the video and see if you can now hear the voices. If you cant then you maybe missing codecs needed to play the audio correctly. Please state if this is a movie you have downloaded or a dvd film on disc etc

Try downloading VLC player, if this does not play your videos then it is your Drive that needs a driver update or has gone bad. If VLC player does play it or asks you to install mpeg2 codecs, then all you need to do is google "mpeg2 codec download for windows media player X" (X being the current version of WMplayer you are using). The reason behind this problem is that Windows media player does not come preloaded with a full library of codecs, there are packages of codecs that you can download such as divx codecs that will have the majority of commonly used video compression decompressors.

Wow yet another GW.
made year 2002, worth zero value now, and no windows support.

why mess with 17 year old PC of any kind, ?
first google hit
There's a security screw on the back that needs to be removed to allow the front latch to release the side panel. It's the stupidest most confusing case ever. The latch is very hard to see, it's part of the black plastic in the front, just push down on things until you see one move a bit. It's sort of like a car door handle movement.

it only runs XP the virus magnet and zero support now on XP nor VISTA and soon W7 the same, (blink blink gone)

seems GW made many odd duck cases,
made in
Poway, California, in October 2001.
now is made in Asia by ACER.com 2007+ ended 2013 our market.

you may have collectors grade PC, but Gateway, nah.......

usa has 830. and 840. we pitch these the trash, no w10 support.

835-zuzec33ptz3j1er1pnknd5pb-3-0.jpg
this looks like slider case to me. the rear side panels do not just pop off 1 by 1, no.
the clue If you look the top and sides are 1 part.
so that top rear screw release it, or the who front comes off pops off and screws seen there release the wrapper.
that is 1 odd duck case. it retire it in a heart beat.
some odd cases tilt the pc from top to rear look bottom front/s
see levers there in plastic and when tripped the whole front tilts off.

Hi!

Rather than trying to walk you through every step here, I've located a tutorial for how to set up your email in Outlook. Outlook's email setup is very similar to Outlook Express's setup. The easiest thing to do is to use the email setup wizard under tools/email accounts in OE. Basically, the key things are to make sure that you enter your email address and PW correctly (the PW is case sensitive), then enter the correct settings for your POP and SMTP email servers. The article points out the correct names, but be sure to use the right RR region (like KC.RR.Com if you're in Kansas City).

Make sure you click on the plus sign next to

default.aspx?assetid=za790050001033Add your Time Warner Cable Road Runner e-mail account

to be able to see the entire text section. If you get confused on anything, post back here.

Good luck and please let me know if this helps!

old gateway , now owned by ACER.com
the old Gateway in Seattle went BUST.
yours 2012 made, not too old, and is ACER for sure inside.

here is the list of top fails, and cures.
1: remove the big battery and test PC, run ok now, on AC only.
it must even forever.
2: replace the RTC coin cell battery at 7year max old. (its time)
3 ;the HDD is bad. we run HDD tests on it now., in this order

learn that if the RTC bat. goes dead the NVram forgets
and with NVram forgets the BIOS can find the perfect HDD.
that is why ORDER matters. for that reason.

if after replacing any RTC bat. we go in to BIOS and reset BIOS to defaults inside BIOS, then make sure boot order inside BIOS
shows, HDD 0 first. and is not missing, if missing HDD may be dead. HDD can fail in 5 years on cheap laptops. and for sure bumped or dropped.

"No signal found" is a generic display from a monitor that is not receiving a signal from the input cable. Your tower, however, may or may not be functioning. If you have another source to connect the monitor to (laptop or other PC) you can try that. Most monitors have a "menu" button. You could press that to see if a menu is displayed on the monitor, That will indicate that the monitor is working as a stand-alone. It will also indicate which input source is being used. If the input source is incorrect, then no signal is being received from the incorrect source. As far as the tower is concerned, the are a myriad of causes for no signal to the monitor. It could be unbootable due to a hardware failure at the mainboard level or the power supply. If you hear a single beep then the main board has passed it's diagnostic testing successfully (memory is ok, chips and CPU are ok). If you hear more than a single beep, the main board is having a problem. If a single beep occurs, them most likely it is the graphics controller. any other failure would be displayed on the monitor. If the graphics controller is on the main board, then you will need to install a new graphics card, bypassing the main board's controller. Was this a working system at one time?

you will need software like NERO to burn cd or dvd select the option (burn image to disc) for mp3 cd to play on all cd players or if you try this go to your downloaded file and clik once left then once right clik then you see the option (send to) put cursor on that option then then another menu will come up then select your dvd drive if you cannot play that dvd after its burned you might need either dvd creator software or you might need a dvd player with Divx capability...you might already have dvd and cd burning software already on your pc like power producer im sure you'll get it on piratebay.org if you download utorrent first<(FREE) hope this helps be carefull of viruses on pirate bay
