PT-47WX42 47 - Red color becomes prominent and screen goes blank when changing channels

Do a reset to this TV, and then check. There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. What size transistor goes to each convergence chip - location number on board (i.e., 80 goes to r7001, etc.)

Not sure what you are talking about, this set uses two of the STK-392-110 CONVERGENCE IC'S. There are no transistors that go to individual pins on those chips directly---you are talking about the light blue resistors that do go to individual pins---most are 2.2 ohm and 1/2 size and those are about the only ONES THAT EVER FAIL--HAVING FIXED NEARLY 200 OF THIS EXACT MODEL SET, never seen more than one of the 2.2 ohm resistors bad---If you want to make sure each is the correct value, Google for the full service manual by model number, no one carries those number to value with location numbers in their pockets, IF ANY OF THE 2.2 were bad set would shut down and constantly blink 3 blinks at the power light.

How to switch from 480p to 1080i

480p to 1080i

Your TV should automatically switch to 1080i if the source input is in 1080i format. Also, since your TV does not have HDMI, you must use the component 1 or 2 inputs (using component cables) for 1080i source material. You cannot get 1080i from composite or s-video inputs. You should be able to switch to the component inputs using the remote or the front control panel using TV/Video button.

Blue wave of color on bottom of screen

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I have a panasonic pt-47wx42 a red shadow of the

If you have gone into the customer menu and CONVERGENCE is skewed and will not adjust:

One or both of the two STK-392-110 convergence chips that this set uses are bad.

The chips are about 2 1 /2 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches tall and are black in color. They are mounted on metal heat sinks2.gif with fins and are side by side--they will have the Stk-392-110 number printed on them in white letters.

If you locate them take a good look at all the light blue resistors in front of them--most are marked 2.2 ohms---look for any that are white or discolored in the middle---if you find one or more YOU HAVE FOUND YOUR PROBLEM.

BOTH chips and any bad resistors need to be replaced and the set adjusted. If you can do this repair you can save a lot of money as you can buy both chips (a pair) on Ebay for about 12 dollars plus shipping2.gif.

I have start to finish instructions for this repair on this type of set.

If you cannot do this repair yourself, shop around your area--most shops charge 300-400 for this kind of repair--I do them here for 200-250 and have done hundreds of them.

If they say it has to go to the shop--keep looking as any good tech can do this repair in your home in about 1 hour.

Picture on tv is dark panasonic mod pt47wx42

IT may be if the set has not been "serviced" in a while a cleaning issue. If picture got gradually darker try something easy first.

Unplug set and remove back cover.

Locate the three large black lens in set based on model number, use either a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on it and clean all three lens.

The lens are the light source for your picture and if dusty the picture will be darker and duller looking than it should be.

If this is your problem it is a good idea to clean the lens at least one time a year.

Let me know if it works OR IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.
