Red flashing means it is a non-rechargeable or incompatible battery. If that flashes red, then the charger probably has a manufacturing defect.

I sounds like the idler wheel is worn out. Do you use your unit to rewind the tapes? if so this is what part needs to be replaced. In any case it is best to use a vhs rewinder whenever a tape should need to be rewound,don't use the Panasonic. This will help to save that part. Its not to say it can't be used but it is the main part that tens to go first. I use to repair these units and replaced that part many times.Good luck. From USA.

Chances are it has a mechanical timer in it. If so there is a mechanical spring mechanism in it. If youcan get the case opened and some access to the switch, you could spray a little WD40 or CRC into the switch and exercise it back and forth until it counts down by itself.

The Panasonic website might have a free manual of the device if that helps.
