Hi Rick I think you are painting yourself into a corner. So to Speak. Why buy a SetTop Box to convert to an old VHS Tape when you can buy a Digital Recorder for probably the same price. The modern way to Record video is to use a Hard Disk Drive Recorder rather than a VCR. They have a built in tuner and can record 2 stations at once and have a built in Electronic Program Guide. The EPG info is transmitted with the Digital TV transmission from the broadcaster. I bought one 2 weeks ago for an old 85yo friend so he could record late night stuff and play back later. He still uses the VCR but only for old VHS Tape playback. It was a TEAC HDR9650TS Digital Video Recorder and I picked it up new for Aus$188. Here are the unit features

Now This was my original reply until I saw the light. So, Hopefully one of these will answer your queerie. A digital TV picks up the new Digital Transmission and stores it in memory, then supplies the high definition to the input of your TV. With a STB, once the digital broadcast signal is captured by the Set Top Box tuner, it is stored in memory and then it is converted to Video Format and comes out of the back connectors as a standard video & audio signal on the Red & White (Audio) & Yellow (Video) as a composite signal that can also be attached to an older VCR tape recorder. If the STB output connectors have a Red White & Yellow RCA plugs then it is all ready to be picked up by an older TV or VCR. Most set top boxes also have HDMI Output for high definition video & sound in the one cable, which attaches directly to the back of your TV (assuming it doesn't already have a tuner (STB) already built in). HDMI is the state of the art cabling for modern devices. But probably not on the old VCR. It will either use Component, Composite or SVideo cables. Match one of these cable standards up with your VCR.

There's either damage in the drive section, or more likely and in some cases "plus" the Mode Switch is set in the wrong position or is faulty. The mode switch tells the electronics what position the VCR mechanism is in. Such as play or fast-forward. If in the wrong place it will carry out other functions - such as eject - in your case.

VCR's have an electronic system inside them that detects what position the VCR mechansim is in. If it gets conflicting messages it will shut the system down to prevent damage. Conflicts can be caused by damage itself to the drive system. They also have a mode switch which tells the electronics what position the VCR is in. However these can go wrong and say give out a message that video is play when in fact it's in eject mode! These conflicts can also arise to when the drive is broken and can't stop the transport mechanism.

The best solution is to take the top cover off the video and give it a really good clean. Get some Servisol Video 40 to spray on. Clean every surface the tape touches. You can use a cotton bud to get into tricky places. It will take longer to clean if the video is in the home of someone who smokes. Cleaning tapes never do a good job, if the video hasn't been cleaned before.

Much better to get a can of Servisol Video 40 remove the top cover of the VCR and spray any part that the tape touches. You can use a cotton bud to clean tricky areas.
If you have never looked in a video before and don't know what parts the tape touches, then when you take off the top cover try a tape and watch. Remove the tape and unplug from the mains to clean. Leave to dry which it does quick. If the picture is bad repeat the clean till it's good, if you can't get it good, there's a head fault.

You will get a much better clean this way than any tape and the Servisol will last longer than a tape.

You must purchase a universal TV remote. Then use the included instructions to program the TV with the new remote.

There is an SMPS unit that powers the set. You could have a failed driverr in this section. check out the input side for short in capacitors, bridge rectifier,SM driver or a mains protector. It will easy to identify by having a continuity tester for identifying the short. replace with the same type. good luck

The universal remote usually comes with a list of manufacturers, models and the codes for each one. In the instructions for the remote there are also steps to have the remote "learn" to the device.

If you have a cable system hook-up, in the menu setup there is a selection for type of TV signal, select cable and then select the auto channel tune feature.

Could be a mode switch problem, you could try Servisol video 40 on the switch, or it might need replacement.

The only way would be a scart lead from the cable box into av2 on the vcr

You need to go into the menu and look for timer recording,then set in the channel,dateand time the program starts,then press the timer button.It will not start recording until it gets to the time the program starts.

Try retuning the whole system, or using the factory default setting.
