Repairing the interior by taking off the exterior
Manufacturers puposely make these items hard to get into so that people who don't know what they're doing keep out. So it's either bite the bullet and try it yourself or take it someone who knows what he's doing. The choice is yours. If prying it apart worries you that much then the easy answer is don't.
Volume knob damaged
My first sons rio c2100 did the same thing . I needed to return it in the mail for the warranty exchange for a refurbished one.Is your warranty still in ? I hope so . If not , they will tell you to buy a referbished one for 99.00 .CRAZY !!! I had bought 2 (for my 2 sons). Now, my second son's power button won't work. The button is really loose and wiggley. He dropped it from only 4 inches onto a carpeted floor .I cannot find anyone to fix this for me . The design on these are absolutely stupid. Do you have any suggestions for me??
My rio used to say upgrator and now its not turning on at all.
I think when you hit the on/off power button (on top near outlet for headphones) AND hit the menu button (on side below volume dial) at same time...it puts the Rio CE2100 into "Upgrader" mode aka "Recovery" mode.
From what I've found online, basically, the firmware to the device is deleted. Trying to reinstall firmware, or reflash the device is nearly impossible. The tiny hole near the earphones is for resetting the device--use a needle (about the only thing that will fit-ouch)...but that only lets you turn it on/off if u get stuck. The tiny hole on face near display is where audio recording mic WOULD be if Rio CE2100 had one.
If ANYONE knows how to escape "Recovery mode" or "Upgrader" mode please share. This is a common final result for many owners of this otherwise great mp3 player.
There is some notation in online help site that says ce2100 requires 500mA from USB and says u can go to Device manager, check ur USB Root Hub, check Power tab to see how much power is being supplied to the device. Mine said 100mA, and doesn't work...but I don't know how to resolve this. =) Maybe tomorrow...or just wait for sales post-christmas. =)
The screen says "Upgrader"
Have you upgraded the software if not try that.
Check your battery voltage if it reads around the 2. something voltage then you need to get that battery to its orginal capacity.
I dont think you'll get your songs back.
Does it have a reset button if so reset it.
Volume control
Yeah its really easy to take it apart, Just becarefull though.

Try this and let me know if it works:
Plug the player into the computer (by the USB cable obviously), open your Rio Music Manager, go to "Tools", "Synchronization options". Then create a "synchronization profile" as instructed. As you progress through the instructions, your second preferrence to edit is called "content deletion". This is where you can tell your player to NEVER delete your music. (Choose "never" from the dropdown menu). Then follow the rest of the steps, answering the other questions as you prefer. Hopefully this will prevent your player from losing songs you've already downloaded.

The reset button is the tiny hole on the top of the player to the left of the volume wheel. Use a paper clip to stick in the hole and push in the reset button for a second. Your screen should turn black and then turn off. Hopefully that will work!
