that problem is very common on a sony tv,the sound IF and video IF of your tv is bad..video and sound IF is located near the tuner section of your tv.some sony model,the IF section and TUNER section are packed in one enclosure. it your tv sound IF is packed together with the tuner,then replace the tuner with a new one.some are packed separately so you need to replace just the IF module only..you can also try to adjust the IF by using a plastic smsll screw driver adjust the IF clock wise or counter clock wise untill you achive a good reception do it with the tv power is on..be carefull with the high voltage...

The problem here is that the vertical IC either has bad connections or is defective. Look for a small flat IC with about 11 pins attached to a heat sink. It will be marked LA7837 or something similar. Try resoldering the pins on the IC first. If that fails to resolve the problem replace the IC.

If you put the back of your hand to the front of the picture screen does it make the hair stand out like static? If not there is no high voltage..Does the audio come from the receiver to the tv or to a suround sound system? My first suggestion is to disconnect the tv from every thing. Plug in an exterior antenna/rabbit ears or just a paper clip into the cable connector and see if you get any local channels. If you have none available, connect to a known good dvd or vcr and see if it works correctly. If so then something has died in the receiver modulator. It might then be possible to use only the audio/video outputs on the receiver to get everything working, however the problem could be deaper in the receiver and not able to be bypassed.....Let me know what you have tried and if anything works. etc.....

I had a similar problem and opened the box and blew out a ton of dust. Still don't know what the problem was, but the sound came back.

& most of my friends are using 2032 since that time.

of course we have modified it to increase channels.

but in my opinion it is like gold.

excellent colour & picture.

so i can say it has minimum life of  20 years with good light.

The Sony part number for these diodes is 8-719-108-12 and yes they are 9.1 volt zener diodes @ 1 watt. I have the service manual for this set if you need it put can only send a large file like this trough a proggy called pand, so if you go to pando.com and get the proggy and leave youe e-mail addy I will send you a copy of this service manual.
