Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-36HS20 36" TV Questions & Answers
Tv keeps turning itself off
To get the right colors, especially a plain white, requires the right mix of red, green and blue from the picture tube. Sony TV sets have a circuit called AKB that automatically keeps the picture tube balanced by adjusting the signals to it. If that balance can't be achieved it shuts off the picture. This may due to tube aging so one of the color guns is too weak to adjust, or failure of parts in the AKB circuit itself. If the sound stays on and the power light starts blinking when the picture goes off, this is likely why.
On the other hand, if the set is turning off completely with no picture, sound or power light, the set may have power supply problems or defective parts in the picture tube high voltage circuits.
Since there are several possible causes, this set needs to be checked by a technician who can diagnose the problem and decide what needs to be done. It's not a simple thing I can point to and say "change this part". If the picture tube is the cause, it's better to replace the set. Otherwise get an estimate, then decide whether to fix or replace.

Sony FD Trinitron TV comes on(KV36HS20), but no picture or sound
Hi,
5 times standby light blinking error is related to picture tube of tv, most possible cause is low screen voltage, adjust screen volts as control knob is located on flyback transformer under focus control knob.
Turn On tv and check, if it still blinking 5 times that means picture tube is so weak in result (very low electron emission in crt gun) so replace picture tube.
Picture tube replacement is not an economical solution for this tv as it would cost you more then its worth.
Hope these info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

Tv wont turn on power
Hi
Thanks for using FixYa. Please post a comment with the no# of blinks standby timer light is flashing and also provide the manufacturers name & model no# so that I can assist you further. If its continuous blinks then it seems to be high voltage section of the unit. You’ll need to open the back of the unit and check/test HOT (horizontal output transformer) and flyback, replace the part that has gone bad. This is only recommended if you have electrical expertise.
Thanks

Sony Model KV-36HS20 turns off
Hi,
When TV shuts off after trying to power up, you will see standby LED blinking, please count that blinks and let me know. There would be 3 seconds interval between LED flashes, so count from interval to interval like is it 5 times blink or 7 times blink.
This is an error code that will give me info that on what section TV got problem. Most probably LED would be blinking 7 times.
It is fixable issue and I'm sure repair cost would under 200
Thanks.

Sony wega kv-36hs20 will not turn on
SEVEN Blinks---High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.

Problems with Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-36HS20
The set is going in to the protect mode.
There are some components that have become thermo sensitive from age and use. After the defective parts come up to their operating temperature they go out of specs.
Most of the time this type of problem comes from the power supply. Sometimes it is from another board that is causing the shut down.
The fix is to start by replacing the power supply for a start. If there are still any faults, the tech will try the boards to zero in on the defective one. Once he locates the defective board, if it is not worth to service, he will leave the new board in the set.
This type of repair can be in the average range between $200 to the $500 range depending on the exact fault. This is providing that the fault is not inside of the screen itself.

Need to center the picture
This is a defect in the vertical scan amplifier. It is not an adjustment. Most of the time there are a number of capacitors in the vertical deflection amplifier that can cause this type of fault. Sometimes the output drive IC can cause this fault, but more rarely.
An experienced service tech can locate the defective parts and replace them. The average time involved is about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Have you tried disabling SVM (scan velocity modulation)? Often touted as a "feature" of TVs, it's a way of artificially making a picture appear sharp. Totally unnecessary. When SVM (sometimes called VM) is on, it can lead to some color bleeding around edges.

Sony Trinitron KV-36HS20
I have this set also..
When you set up for an HD signal (1080i) it is broadcast in 16:9 which is a widescreen format. The Sony set is a 4:3 format (more of a square shape) which means the black bars at the top and bottom appear so that you get the widescreen 16:9 format to appear.
This is one of the main negatives I have about this set, however, I can't really complain as I have had it for 6 years and it works great.
I never knew about the other format until I got an HD receiver from my satellite dish provider last year.
Hope that helps explain it for you..

Picture Shaking
Do you have any big speakers or some other appliance near the TV?
Magnetic fields make the screen images 'shake'.
