Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-36HS500 36" TV - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

We've heard this before from appliance repair persons, auto repair persons, etc. "Go out and buy a new TV, this one will be too expensive to fix." And then it turns out to be a $5 part. If this fixes it, you just saved yourself $800 or so.

Do the standby light ON. If not check the 5V supply rail on the main board. If standby light is ON, and it blinks? If so, these blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If there is distortion and noise, while using the TV, for on-air transmission, and there is no distortion or noise while using it AV, be sure that it tuner is faulty. The fault with your TV is with some loose contact inside it. Normally most Trinitron TVs shows this problem due to loose contact in the video output card. Video output card is pluged diretly to the picture tube base, and can be detachable. You can pull it out very carefully without damaging the pins of of the picture tube. Most of the components in this board will heat up during working. Repeated heating and cooling will make the solder joints of the most heated components to get loose contacted. Normally, these loose contacts are very difficult to detect because they will be microscopic. Just do as what we do for this type of fault.
Resolder most of the suspected solder terminals, with applying a little more solder, without making any solder bridge in between the solder terminals. This will solve the problem of your TV. OK.

As it has a tube, there seems no actual reason for that. The glass cannot change optical characteristics nor the coating on the inside of the tube. Maybe it is an optical illusion.

That means the EHT has exceeded 33KV and it will shut down.
Probably caused by a faulty/maladjusted power supply. Check the 135Volt rail.

This is an indication that you have a problem on the power supply section or on the load because of the following reasons :

1. Over Voltage - the regulator might be cycling on over voltage due to lack of load.

2. Over Current Protection - excessive load or faulty power supply cycling will

trigger the over current protection circuit.

3. High voltage - there might be an excessive high voltage or some other system detecting an out of regulation condition. However, in this case, there should be some indication that the deflection and HV is attempting to come up - momentary whine, static on the screen, etc.

4. Leaky Capacitor - a dried up main filter capacitor or other filter capacitor in the low voltage power supply that is producing an out-of-regulation condition. A bad filter capacitor on the output of a series regulator may result in excessive/drop of voltage causes your unit not to power up unless isolated.

5. A problem with the microcontroller, relay or its driver, or standby power supply.

This is not DIY and quite technical so I've advice you to look for a qualified technician or send it to repair shop to isolate the problem.

it might be dust build up if it has been in a dusty house. tvs collect dust easy it my need to be cleaned or it could be the fuse is not getting a good connection or maybe getting ready to blow, it could be either in my mind. Hope this helps

I had the same problem. I took off the back and blew out the dust with compressed air, and it came back on.

Your power supply board is dead, u know basic electronics' and soldering? Most of the times, the power supply board just have dead leakages gases capacitors.These capacitors always bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top.Replaced these gases leakages capacitors will get your TV power stable,and work again.Or tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.

this symptom is usually caused by a breakdown in power supply circuit or it may also be caused by a breakdown in the horizontal deflection circuits which includes horizontal oscillator, pre drive or drive circuits, horizontal output transformer, horizontal output transistor and high voltage circuits (flyback transformer). pls observe precautions in dealing with this high voltage circuits and if so happen you are not inclined with this kind of work, it is better for you to bring it to a qualified technician to avoid accident. good luck!
