There is a very common problem in yur set that will cause this. The KV36hs500 is knowen for two IC's to cause intermitant power condition. A good repair shop will run you somewhere between $300-$400 to do the repair.

HDTV problem

You should test the TV set using a known good source such as a DVD player with RGB outputs to drive the set. If it is good, then this rules out the TV set from being at fault.

From experience, many times I found compatiblity issues between computers and TV sets. The computer's resolution and refresh rate must be set exactly to the TV's capability.

The flashing light normaly indicates that the power supply section is in the protect mode, or has failed, and or there is a failure in the scan amplifier section, and or there is a short most likely there may be a short. There are many things that can cause this type of fault. You will have to take the set to a Sony service center or the equivement to have your set properly serviced.

Sony T.V. KV-36HS500

This problem has been reported by others in another forum and was traced to the "D" board. There are a number of capacitors that need to be replaced. The "D" board is no longer available as a replacemetn part, so it needs to be repaired. These caps are not expensive, so the repair should not be too bad. Figure on $20 or so for parts pluse the local laboir charge.

Sony Trinitron XBR, Stand By Mode?

The 6 or 7 blinks usually indicate a problem in the horizontal circuit. Since the TV recovered once, the problem is most likely to be a bad solder connection in that area. If you can solder, resolder any connections on the board that appear grainy or have rings. That may resolve the problem. If not, update this and we'll look elsewhere for defective parts.

Getting out of standby mode

That blinks and flashing have a diagnostic code;

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.
  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.
  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.
Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.
Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..
IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

Hope it may help you;

TV doesn't come on but has blinking light on front

It means that the horizontal sweep dirived power supply did not start up. The standby supply started and then when the horizontal started to but was shut down because of a short, the main supply also shut down, Thats what the 5 blinks compared to the 6 blinks mean. Now what can yoiu do. It all depends on how much you know about solid state serviceing. iof you know how to unsolder and resolder, read a schematic diagram, know how to use a scope and /or multimeter, know how to test transistors , capacitors and resistors, then maybe you can troubleshoot this puppy. If you answered just a maybe to any of the above, call in a pro to assist you as these sets have no user serviceable parts inside them. Also lots o ,lots o high voltage inside of them, even when they are unplugged. Now if you do know anything about electronics, first thing I would do would be to check the horizontal output trasistor along with the flyback transformer.

Standby mode and can't get tv to work

This sounds like the set is in protective shutdown. A problem has been detected and the set shut down. Normally when this happens, the standby light will blink a code count. Can you count the blinks and post that number here? That will indicate the circuit in which the problem was detected. Also, please confirm that the model number of the set is: KV-36HS500 as the blink codes are different based upon model.

Thanks,
Dan

Sony kv-36hs500

If you have experience soldering, this is a piece of cake. IF resoldering did not resolve the problem for very long, the problem in inside of the IC and the IC needs to be replaced.

I'm guesing a bit here, because I don't have the original question in front of me. I'm not entirely sure of the context of the initial problem. Can you add a comment to the original question if this does not seem right. Doing that will popup the original into my work queue.

Thanks,
Dan

This sounds like the beginning of a convergence IC failure. If you can solder, you should be able to resolve this yourself. Let me know if that is what you wich to do and I'll provide some additional details and instructions.

Sony KV Trinitron WEGA 36" TV won't turn on

My 36 wega did the same thing last week it must be contagious. Blinks 7 times mostly but sometimes 6 if hit power switch again. The problem is the D-boards shorted Flyback high voltage transformer but the ones Sony is selling $130 do not hold up and seem to burn out in a few days, yes twice bitten. Finally they send me new D-board can't wait to see if this fixes it once and for all. The board costs around $200 but is worth it to get it running again.

Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-36HS500 36" TV - Bowed Picture

it sounds like a convergence adjustment problem. If you hava book on the tv still read it, and it will tell you what to do, other wise, look for a convergence button on the front of your tv, and take the remote and push menu to bring up setup, and go convergence adjustment click it and hit the conv. button on the front of the screen. there should be to lines going vertical and horizontal, these are the limes you adjust with your remote, you have to adjust the red and blue, the tv should blink to let you know which color you are on. when you have them lined up right the line will be perfectly white. hope this helps
