Picture but no sound
Many times the jack which was plugged in to connect your surround sound system, automatically breaks the continuity of its own speaker system & if its not disturbed for a long time, jams the return spring which comes into play once the jack is removed. This restores the circuit for its own speakers. Try smearing the old jack with spirit or alcohol & keep reinserting the jack so as to remove the jam. Hopefully the trick works otherwise the set will have to be opened and the socket replaced or rectified......................sodeep

I can't get Video 1 off in the upper left corner
Contrary to some opinions, you totally can. You only need to locate the "display screen information" button on your remote (on mine, it is at the very top, second on the left) and hit it once. Screen information will disappear. It took me a while to figure this out, but I am relieved that it eventually worked

TV won't turn on
The set is in protective shutdown because a problem was detected. The 5 blink code indicates that the problem circuit. In this case it is the blanking circuit. Were there any indications of problems prior to the storm? If not, I'll need to lok up this one for the specifics. Do you intend to repair this yourself?
Let me know and I'll provide the details.
Thanks,
Dan

Sony trinitron xbr 32"
Did you correctly select the S-Video input on the TV via the remote? In other words, if the TV is not set to look at the S-Video input then nothing will happen. You have either an "input", "source" or tv/vcr button that will allow you to select what input the tv will look at for a signal. Make sure it's set to S-Video.

Screen looks like a picture negative, PIP works fine, sound fine
Sony's have dual tuning systems to allow for the separate PIP channel. The common problem on the Sony's is the circuit board and tuning module connections go bad. It is likely that the connections on the board or module were already in the decayed process and moving it just accelerated the issues that were inevitable.
The quick fix is to swap the PIP over to the main picture or to bus the antennae signal to the antennae B terminal thus bypassing the bad tuner module.
The recommended fix action is to have someone with soldering skills to remove the chassis, and locate all the cold and cracked solder joints, especially near the tuning modules. If this does not take care of the problem, the tuning modules will need to be removed for re-soldering on the actual tuner modules.
If none of the above works, then you can always use the audio/video outputs of a cable box or vcr to the a/v jacks of the tv, thus bypassing both tuners in the tv.

SET WON'T GO ON.
This set should generate a blink code with teh standby light. Please verify the exact model number and the blink count that the set generates. That will allow us to determine the problem circuit and possible resolutions.

Our Sony 32sxr10 turns completely red after an
2 possibilities. 1 bad connections on the crt drive board. You can try removing the cover and looking at the PC board that is connected to the CRT (picture tube). If your lucky you will see tiny circles around some of the solder joints. Make sure you turn off and unplug and resolder the bad connections. The other trouble is the CRT itself this you can't fix and I don't believe the part is even available anymore.

My Sony flat screen when first turned on will run
You might be able to see what is shutting the set off. Sony models employ a memory for failures. When the set is off push: Display, 5, Volume down, Power. Make sure your push all within 1 second. The set should come on with a display of the errors. A list of items followed by 0 ro 1. anything with a 1 has shut the set off. With that info at least you will know going to a Sony repair center what you can expect to pay or at least have a better idea.

Caption Vision is OFF but Close Captioning text still appears
Try a reset. With the tv off push : Display, 5, Vol+, Power. Be sure to push all within 1 second. The set should come on in the service mode. If you get in just push 8. The set should turn off and reset. If your lucky when you turn it back on it won't have the trouble. If it still has trouble you should expect to pay about $150 to have the microprocessor and eprom changed.

Initial Setup Screen
Have you ever cleaned the set front glass with windex or glass cleaner.Sometimes the fluid runs down before you can wipe and lands inside right on top of the push buttons that control ( CH,VOL, MENU, etc.) If this happens you can get this trouble. If you up to it take the cover off and look at the board just under the front edge of the crt. If you see green or grey residue you probably have to remove that corresponding TAC switch. You can just cut out and use the remote for that function.
