Please press Info/ Display button on TV Remote so on-screen display that shows source will disappear.
Please note that only Sony TV Remote will work to close/ disappear on-screen display. Universal remote may not have that "Info or Display" button for that.

Blinking of standby light in Sony sets are fault indication. You just count the exact number of blinks occur at on instance, say, after you switch On and OFF by its front panel power switch, not by remote control hanset. Just count it atleast 4 times, count it keenly and inform it to me, and let me reach to the nearest falult point; or sometimes to the exact point. OK.

Yes, its normal as TV remember its last status like channel number/ AV input, volume level, video settings etc in its memory. If you put TV in standby and then unplug it, TV will turn on in standby mode after replugging back in.

problem doesn't seem to be on the power supply board only! had the service center check the high voltage section already? does the popping sound like the one popcorns make?

Check the battery if its still good. if not replace with new one. if its still good, open the remote and inspect for loose connection. resolder if necessary. check also for possible crack pcb. good luck!

This TV is 10 years old and probably requires a service that replaces the backlight invertor or just a power supply issue. Check to see if the light blinks. (That is the fault code and then google the result for more information).
