It probably was a bad product. Call sony and they should send you a replacement depending on how old your product is.

A rather older set:picture blinks may be screen controls now set too lowpicture dark same or lens need cleaningcolor off either adjustments or a Convergence issue

Trace the voltage to the main board and you must be able to confirm that the +B to the board is in order. since there is sound the front end sections are in order and the fault relates to a failed drive or video process.Check the power to the lamp circuits if there is no output this is the area to trace.if there is glow on the screen then there is absence of video output drive and it needs a trace. use of signal tracing and injection might be needed or you must get help to confirm before any board or costly spare is changed.

try replacing your lamp and also resenting your timer make sure to get a Philips lamp and if you kneed a ballast try calling discount merchant they are very good and have original lamps also they trouble shoot any problem you may have with your dlp

Sounds like convergence problem. Fixing the problem requires removing, desoldering and soldering the convergence ICs.
The repair for this may go for a couple Hundred or more..
