Try pressing the Flash Focus button on the TV to adjust the convergence of the TV.
Sony TVs has an Optical Block issue. If there is an issue with the optical block, then there will be green, blue patches or tint on the TV display. Try resetting the TV to the factory settings and try Power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue still persists, then TV may require service. You can contact the Customer relations team and check for the available options. Sony had repaired free of cost for such issues. Hence, contact the customer relations.

You will need to replace the two convergence IC'S this set uses--they should be STK-392-560 and are located on metal heat sinks side by side; usually towards the left as you look from the back.

If only one color is skewed, replacing both should cure the problem---a pair of the chips can be purchased on EBAY for about 12 dollars.

Soldering is involved and some skill to get at, remove, and replace the chips.

Let me know if you need more information--I have fixed hundreds of these sets for this problem.

Repair will take about a hour or longer if you have never done it before.

This could be due to your Blue bulb going.

If you have already adjusted the color through the menu then it maybe hardware related. Replace bulb, and have internal projector removed and cleaned to see if this helps with the whites.

The Red CRT has shorted.

This problems also cause by the 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistor are dead.Require changing the 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors will solved this fading out and shuting down.

I have seen this one before. It is caused by voltage spike on the green CRT. Did you adjust the green color voltage to remove the retrace lines?

Do you have excessive drive lines on screen before it shuts off?
If so then you need to adjust the screen controls to your Tubes.

There are few possibilities for these thin green lines, we call it retrace lines.
Either screen (G2) volts are high for green picture tube or cathode volts (+200V) are missing on green crt base circuit board. And last is green picture tube got shorted internally.
In view of above info, you can decide to call tv repairman or do it yourself.

Ur tv have a problems know as a Convergence problems,it dead.The tv convergence board reqiure 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors to be replaced to solved the convergence board problems.The shop will cost u $300-350 for parts and labors.

Just a guess, but I'll bet the red power on indicator lamp blinks 8 times when it does this, yes? If so that is a problem with the high voltage circuit.

Replace a color gun in your KP51HW40. Then adjust the picture brightness to eliminate these rings by turning a little button behind the front (cloth like) panel (the one covering the front bottom half of the set). You may have to to dim the lights to be able to do that properly. The little dial button as is in the middle.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

CONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Install the Sony type 1 convergence repair kit available from www.tvrepairworld.com the kit includes the components and the cd with instructions.

Double image on screen is due to failure of convergence output ICs in tv, replace convergence output ICs to solve the issue.

if blue picture tube is blooming with retrace lines? it's because it developed internal short. you might try to turn down screen on blue picture tube. always mark with fingernail polish so you can return to starting position. J.D.W.

Thanks for using FixYa. This is often caused by failed convergence ICs. I don’t think the issue is with the power supply of the unit as the sound is coming fine from the unit. It’s not a difficult job if you want to do this yourself, you should require some basic knowledge about soldering-resoldering components. To start with you’ll have to open the back of the unit and then replace the ICs (STK ICs) which are located behind the black heat sink and also check the resistors as if they are short the ICs might blow again after sometime. There are repair kits available which includes repair instructions with the parts, if you want to do it yourself, you can buy and repair it yourself. If your TV has a focus option in the menu try that,

the screen bias needs to be turned down-ehind the front cover which is behind the grille there is a small black square about 3 inch square 6 little knobs sticking out 3 say in small letters screen and 3 say focus, don't adjust the focus just the screen for the coresponding color that shows up when picture is dark.best way to do this is darken the room and put it on video input with no signal if lines are white slowly
adjust 1 color after the other counterclockwise untill
lines disappear if only 1 color shows then only adjust the knob with the matching color. this is a very fine adjustment, to much will make your auto focus stop working. check it after you are done
