My Sony rear projection TV has three images that

It can be fixed, if picture is 3d looking it is what is called a convergence problem.

See attached photos of typical ones. This set uses two of the STK-392-560 convergence IC chips.

It can be a do it yourself repair but this does require being able to solder.

Parts cost would on EBAY be under 25 dollars.

Let me know if you want instructions, I have photos of the parts and the board they are on.

see attached photos.

What is the problem causing the tv to be blury and

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I think this is my model, I will check tonight.

This is a convergence problem and can usually be traced to either poor solder connections at the convergence ICs or defective ICs. Please update this with the exact model number so that I can post the part numbers and costs.

Thanks,
Dan

That model of Sony has a protection feature that shuts the whole TV down when voltage problems are detected. In this case, shutting off entirely usually means that something is very wrong with the power to the entire TV circuits.
You can call Sony for the name of repair companies in your area. A diagnostic visit from their factory rep or designee will usually run about $150 in the US. They'll take that amount off of the total bill if you go forward with the repair. Replacement of the video power control IC boards run about $250 in parts, plus the initial $150 labor charge, for a total of $400 for a typical repair.

Model kp-53xbr4ct made 1998. picture was good.

the video color distortion with the bowing in the center is called a convergence failure. the 6 blinks indicate a power supply shutdown for high voltage protect. the 14 blinks is just the tv trying to turn back on. you may be having to problems with the convergence and the 6 blinks or it may be related because the convergence amps can cause shutdown if they are shorted. i suggest calling a serviceman per the possible tow different failures. good luck

I turn on my sony

These sets have a history of bad picture tubes, the blue is most common, there is a way to without replacement of any parts to attempt to correct this.

you have to remove the entire grill on the front below the screen; it is usually held in either by two screws at the front (under little plastic caps) and or screws on the back on either side.

The grill will pull out and is engaged with large plastic tabs at the top; with it out since the front keyboard is mounted into it you lift and tilt it to the left. Remove the inspection plate behind it: look for the screen/focus block (see attached photo) and note the six controls: three are screen and three are focus----do not touch the focus ones.

They are usually marked (may be hard to see: r,g,blue) You want to locate the BLUE SCREEN CONTROL and with the set on on a unused video input turn the screen control SLOWLY (usually to the left) until you see no blue in the background; if you do it correctly all you should see is the Video 1 etc.

The idea here is to lower the blue screen setting just slightly-if it works you may only be buying some time as these sets are prone to problems like this.

I have done this several times and many see a few more years of use before they have to be replaced.

Let me know before you attempt this if any questions.

Starting last night our tv has had a "ghost" thing

What you have is a very common convergence issue which could either be rather spendy if you take it to a technician like me. It usually costs approximately between $300-$400 if yo bring it to someone who knows what they are doing OR you could go to www.tvrepairkits.com and order the convergence repair kit for about $75-$80. Ed will set you up with the resistors, the integrated circuits, thermal paste, and step by step directions. It would take a novice about an hour and a half to complete the repair and you would save yourself some money. Sorry, there is no scan option to fix it.

My sony projection tv has

2 blinks on this model means Horizontal output transistor Q8024 is shorted(Deflection board) . That explains blue screen with no image and immediate shutdown. Also to be tested are transistors at locations Q8035 and 8038.If you are seeking the assistance of a tv tech to fix it, 150$ would be an ideal charge as this repair is relatively easier than most other component level repairs on this set. If you are in the US please get me your zipcode so that I can get you a list of techs in your area.
