According to several sites, the problem is with the convergence via the voltage on the color ray gun tubes that get out of adjustment. They are also known as retrace lines

Sony wanted between $150-$300 to diagnose and fix -- instead I was able to complete this repair in less than 15 minutes!
Since I had been through the routine once more and I was sure others are running into this issue,
1. All you need to complete this guide is one flat-head screwdriver and one Phillips screwdriver as well as a delicate touch.
2. Front shot of the television. Their are two screw holes on the front of the unit near the edge of each side right next to the speaker grille.


3. Close up shot of the screw hold. It is covered by a plastic cover that has two tabs holding it in. Carefully pry them out with your flat head screwdriver. Do not apply too much pressure or you can break the tabs off. Once the covers are removed, unscrew the two screws with a Philips screwdriver.


4. To remove the cover, pull from the bottom of the front case and rotate towards you. Once you rotate it out, the top will disconnect and come loose. Do not pull it off, as there are cords attached. (see picture) Loosen the cables attached with the twist ties and set the front cover to the left side.


5. With the speaker grille and cover removed, you now need to remove the wood panel to expose the inner electronics on your Sony HD TV. To do this, remove the four Philips head screws from the panel. Then, pulling from the right, rotate the panel off and the electronics will be exposed.


6. This is a picture of the inner electronics of your Sony Rear-Projection High Definition television. The little black box towards the front of the unit is where we will concentrate our time as it is the control for the voltage & convergence adjustment.


7. When focused in on the controls, you want to concentrate on the bottom row for the voltage / ray gun projection adjustment. The colors are labeled below and from left to right are blue, green, and red. Choose the one that needs to be adjusted and turn ever so slightly with your Philips screwdriver to remove the lines. In my case, the red just needed to be turned 1/8 of a rotation to be back in adjustment. Do not turn to quickly or abruptly or you could possibly damage your TV by varying the voltage too quickly.

Hello, it sounds like the blue crt has a cathode short in it and causes an overdrive situation putting the set into shutdown. The crt's are no longer available.

This is called Red Retrace. Your Red CRT and CRT board is defective. I do not believe you can get a replacement CRT anymore. Not even a rebuild. I think it is safe to say it is time to buy a new TV.

Power supply regulator section has the fault. If you are not familiar with electronics, do not attempt to repair. Whether you suffer fatal electrical shock! Google for the service manual, should be available online for free, the G2 voltage should come from the D board where the high voltage circuit is.

Hi. It seems that the g2 voltage of the picture tube is too high, resulting in a white screen, often with white horizontal lines. The g2 (= second grid) voltage is derived from the flyback high voltage. The voltage divider is mostly integrated in the flyback trafo housing.(including the adjustment knobs). A failure in this divider may lead to this defect. The static you hear may come from sparking in the divider. The flyback trafo is soldered onto the main printed cirrcuit board. Sometimes, one of the pins sits loose in the soldering pads.Turn on the set and observe for any sparking around the entire flyback circuitry, and, or the flyback trafo itselfThe screen turns black after a while, as a too high beamcurrent is detected. The set disables the flyback. Stand-by blinks meaning that there is a fault condition.Be carefull with the high voltages. The flyback voltage is very high (20-30 Kilovolts !) and may be lethal !!

try adjusting the screen voltage for the red tube the adjustment is located behind the speaker grill on the focus /screen adjustment block

sounds like theres a problem with the tube inside the television. most of the time they arent worth fixing as its costly.

1. Remove the 5 screws from behind each speaker2. Grasp bottom center of plastic panel and "pop" forward. Swing upward to remove.3. Remove 4 screws from the wooden panel in center.4. There is a "black box" in the very front of electronics. It will have torque paint on the 2 rows of 3 screws. top row is labeled "focus"MY TV would go green before going black. Volume still worked.5. I turned the center bottom screw (marked "green") appx. 1/8 to 1/4 turn COUNTER clockwise.Plugged TV in and it works fine.

Its either blue tube or bad componet on blue CRT board hertes how to know disconnect Blue CRT board connect to neck of blue tube turn set on see what happens if set come on and plays then this lets you know if it is a problem with tube/video ic on crt board. If set shuts back off different problem.
