The problem here with the lamp is it has an average 2,000 hour life--only way for a "tech" to know if it is the problem is to replace it.The ballast is the power supply for the lamp---lamp goes bad a lot more often than the ballast= sounds like the tech wants to create a shop repair..........Sometimes the lamp will provide a warning by being dimmer just before it fails and sometimes not.The lamp is customer replaceable(owner manual and You Tube have written and video instructions for most models). You if change the lamp take a gamble--either it fixed the problem or not--Any shop or expert who tells you to replace the ballast first without even trying another lamp (10 minute job) is feeding you a story for lack of another expression.

I have a KDF60XS955. When I power it on, the fan comes on, the standby light flashes green several times, the lamp comes on and the standby light goes to solid green. This lasts for less than 5 seconds then the lamp goes out, followed by ~30 green standby flashes, the lamp coming on with the solid green standby light for about 5 seconds then shuts off the lamp again. I can hear/feel the fan running the enitre time. This cycle continues endlessly. Please help!

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.

If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.
The TV keeps shutting off,
I'm having the same problem. My TV will play for for awhile and then it just dims down for about 1 to 2 minutes then powers up again. The green light stays on doesn't blink at all, and there is no red light that comes on or blinks like when our lamp went out. We replaced the lamp about 6 months ago and it's been working great until this week.
Blinks red 3x why ?
you have a lamp or lamp door switch that is failing. The only way to fix it is to replace the switch that is bad. The price range to have this repaired normally runs between $200-300. The range is so wide because if the lamp door switch is bad then it is a lot easier to change, if the lamp switch is bad (which it normally is) it is mounted on the light engine and almost the entire tv has to be disassembled to change it.
