High-pitched sound when using surround sound

I had the same problem, check your wires on the back of the tv and make sure your, red, yellow and white wires are in the correct holes. What kind of tv do you have, as I have an Ilo, and it has like 15 different plugs in the back, you may have to get you book out and make sure you have it in the correct hole on the back of the tv... I hope this helps....

Flashing standby message.

Are any of the buttons not making a click feel when you press them like maybe one is stuck?? You didnt say if the same thing happen with the radio as did with the cd. If it is then a switch is stuck or bad or a problem with the switch matrix for the Microprocesor . Only way to trouble shoot this is I would use a scope and check all of the matrix {ie scann lines as well as input lines for distortion or noise and make sure when the buttons are pussed that they change and switch accordinly. If they dont then the processors bad. Good luck

Out of the blue I

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Sony DAV-SC8. I'm suddenly getting distortion

It sounds like the speakers themselves are the problem rather than the amp.
Although, it would be rare to have overdriven/blown the surrounds.
My suggestion would be to isolate which speakers or channels (on Amp) are at fault.
Swap left and right to see if the problem transfers across.
