I have shorted left speaker output by leaving the speaker unplug...the two wire shorted together and blown something, someone got an idea of witch component i should replace? thx

Probably took out the output transistors for that channel. Is the unit dead now? Usually in these models, if the outputs go, it takes out the main power fuse.

Sony Stereo Receiver - STR-DE425 Loud

Toggling power on and off is NOT a good idea, nor does it ever really fix anything.

Does the TV affect the receiver even if you have other sources selected or speakers disabled?

Establish if the TV connection or lack of it affects the problem by disconnecting one cable at a time (I have no idea what cables you use) to see if the self-protection is caused when the TV is turned On. Prove that each cable is or is not involved with glitching the receiver. If it still pops after the TV is completely floated from the receiver, consider a power surge as the culprit. Maybe you need to place the receiver on a power circuit that isn't shared with the TV.

Oh, btw, you're not drawing power from the convenience outlets on the reciver for anything that sucks up a lot of juice, are you?

Says protection on it and no sound

The most common problem found on FixYa for Audio Video Receiver's is:

My receiver say's "Protect" or turns on then off. What's wrong? Seven times out of ten it is a shorted speaker or speaker wire2_bing.gif. To determine your exact problem, the first step is to disconnect all speaker wires "at your receiver" Next: Turn the receiver back on. If your receiver still says "protect" or turns off, it needs to be serviced. If your receiver stays on; reconnect your speakers one at a time and power back up after each speaker. You may find that after reconnecting all speaker wires it works! Most commonly the small braids of wire from the + to the - have touched and have caused the problem. In some instances, you noticed the problem only when turning the volume up. either way, make sure the exposed wires to your receiver are no longer than 1/2" long and are completely under the screw down terminal or slide in. When you've found the wire or speaker with the problem, your receiver will go back into "protect" At this point, disconnect the wire from the speaker at the speaker that may be causing the problem then test again.* Note* Make sure speaker wires do Not touch each other as this Will cause a short! If you turn the receiver back on and it stays on, you now know the problem is in your speaker itself. To test your speaker, you will need a multimeter. Set it to ohms resistance and touch the speaker terminals, if there is a short internally the meter will read "1......" If it's an analog meter, it will peg to the right. There's your problem. Now, within any speaker there are quite a few possibilities as to what could be causing the problem. Most common is a blown coil and the speaker needs to be replaced. Some speakers have internal crossovers (usually floor standing speakers2_bing.gif) and may have a shorted or burnt board (usually very visible brown burn marks on the board) and can possibly be repaired if your handy with a soldering iron. Now, if you disconnect the speaker wire at the speaker and it still says "protect" Check your wire for the obvious cut or nail thru the wire if possible. If your system has wiring that runs behind walls, you may need to use your meter again. Disconnect the wire at both ends, keep the ends separated, put your meter on ohms resistance and touch probes to the + and - wires at one side. If the meter pegs to the right or reads "1...." the wire is shorted and needs to be replaced or repaired at the short. Hope this helps.

Flashing

Contact Sony website - usually a malfunction in the unit requiring service, and you cannot reset it. HOWEVER, try the usual unplug, wait and plug-in again. Make sure that there's not a shorted speaker - so unplug all speakers and try using just headphones. Also, make sure you have air ventilation around the unit - nothing on top of it, as that will cause it to overhead and shutdown. Try these items and report back. Good Luck!

The reciever comes on and shows a radio station

this usually indicates a fault has tripped and something is shorting out.

check your wire terminals make sure a strand of cooper wire isn't wrapped around something

next if there are buttons to turn the speakers off do so, then check to see if you can turn the surriound sound can be set to "stereo" in that second before it locks up.

If you can eliminate the 5 speaker terminals from being a problem then thats a good step but fir unstance if the second you push speaker A to on it locks up then you know the problem is in the circuitry.

This happened to me with an Onkyo receiver about 5 years ago the cost to repair was $180and took 3 weeks. You will have to decide if its worth putting money into the unit. If you paid lets say $300 and its 5 years old you would be better served by upgrading to a new unit that wll boast ,ore modern features.

Also as a last resort twist the inputs on the back of the unit just to verify that an RCA connector has not come unsoldered. Another quick check would be uncrew the 6-10 screws that hold the top on. Look for something that is loose in there. I had a sonance amp that sounded bad when you shaked it and all it was was a fuse that popped out of its holder.

Stuck in protect mode

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot if PROTECT or PROTECTOR is flashing in the display of the A/V receiver:
IMPORTANT: If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
NOTE: Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the A/V receiver status after completing each step.
  1. Check the speaker wires and speakers for proper connections.
  2. Reduce the volume level. IMPORTANT: If the A/V receiver is used at maximum volume level, it may enter the PROTECT mode. Maximum volume listening will cause the A/V receiver to run very hot and may drain the output capacitors.
  3. Disable the surround sound option if both the A and B speakers are being used simultaneously.
  4. Ensure the top of the A/V receiver has proper ventilation to keep it from overheating.
  5. If the message only occurs when using a DVD player, the sampling frequency may be set too high. IMPORTANT: Some A/V receivers provide compatibility with the higher sampling frequencies through alternate connections. Consult the owners manual for specific information.
  6. Unplug the AC power cord for approximately 1 to 2 hours to reset the output transformers.
If the issue is still unresolved, service may be required. The Sony® eService Web site at http://eservice.sony.com/ can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer.

Protection error

Your speakers or the wiring to the speakers shorted out, and a fuse inside of your receiver is blown. You can purchase a new unit or attempt to replace the fuse yourself.
